The San'Shyuum (Forerunner designation, translated into Latin as Perfidia vermis, meaning "worms of treachery") are a highly intelligent humanoid species. During the time of the Forerunner Empire, the San'Shyuum and humanity formed an alliance that conquered the Orion arm of the Milky Way Galaxy. However, when humanity started a war with the Forerunners, the San'Shyuum were punished as well, being sealed within a quarantine zone around their home system, though they were able to stockpile outdated Forerunner technology. When the Forerunner-Flood War began, they sensed the turmoil when the Librarian took samples of their species for cataloguing, pushing them to revolt, though all they would accomplish is scarring their planet before they were wiped out by the Halo Array. Over a century later, five hundred million were reintroduced to their homeworld where they discovered their own stolen ancient technology, forming a religion around it; the Covenant.

In 2200 BCE, a group of radical religious reformists proposed entering the Forerunner Dreadnaught crashed on their planet to learn more of their gods and make better use of their technology. After 100 years of war in which the reformists were outnumbered, but held the technological advantage, 1000 San'Shyuum reformists took control of the Dreadnaught, ripping a piece of the planet with them, which would later become the Covenant's holy city, High Charity.

Due to their extremely limited ranks, strict reproduction control was put in place, and they scoured the stars, waging one-sided wars with and recruiting the various species of the Covenant. However, in 2525, three San'Shyuum discovered humanity, and their status as the chosen inheritors of the Forerunners, as well as the nature of the Forerunners' disappearance and the Halo Rings. Realizing that either of these revelations alone could destroy the Covenant entirely, the three overthrew the current High Prophets, becoming the new High Prophets of Mercy, Truth, and Regret. With their new teachings of the "Great Journey" that is begun with the firing of the Halo Array, just as the Forerunners had, they began the Human-Covenant War.

With the destruction of High Charity by the flood during the war, the vast majority of San'Shyuum were killed. By the end of the war, the High Prophets were dead, and the remaining San'Shyuum reached near-extinction. Taking what few Covenant ships they could, they vanished from the galaxy, alongside the majority of the Covenant's Huragok.

Deceivers. San'Shyuum, particularly the descendants of the reformists who acclimated to low gravity and typically suffer some form of inbreeding, are weak, frail beings. Instead, their strength comes from their technology and intelligence, manipulating the Covenant into fanatical warriors of faith.

Castes. San'Shyuum can be organized into multiple different castes, each chosen by rank.

  • Prophets, who make up the majority of the Covenant's Council of Prophets.
  • Stoic Prophets, who remained on Janjur Qom and benefit from superior physical health.
  • High Prophets, who rule the Covenant aboard their Gravity Thrones.
  • Prelates, who act as the Covenant's holy super soldiers.
