Cosmology

A typical Spelljammer adventure primarily occupies the space between and beyond worlds.

Phlogiston

The Phlogiston, also known as the Flow, makes up the vast majority of the material plane. This vast ocean is filled almost exclusively with a gaseous substance also called phlogiston, also known as aether, which shifts in color as its density shifts, causing luminous currents to grow and weaken, owing to its epithet as the "Rainbow Sea". While aether is both odorless and non-toxic, it is flammable and can not be breathed by most creatures. Aether is a true quintessence; wholly separate from the four elements that make up existence within crystal spheres, and is unable to exist within them, quickly dissipating even if contained. Additionally, travel between dimensions within phlogiston, such as through a plane shift spell or portable hole is impossible unless aided by powerful magic like a wish spell.

Crystal Spheres

Throughout the Phlogiston float numerous crystal spheres of titanic scale composed of a dark ceramic that is invulnerable to all known assaults, though portals occasionally open in their surface. Despite their size, typically twice the diameter of their furthest planet's orbit, the nature of phlogiston make them almost imperceptible until the observer is within miles of them. Wildspace, the space within a crystal sphere, is typically dotted with a single sun and a spattering of planets, moons, and other celestial bodies, but is otherwise a complete void, even to air. Each crystal sphere is home to its own gods, and the shell of the sphere marks the edge of their influence, though a small number of gods are able to occupy multiple spheres either directly or in aspects.
