Conrectus (5e Race)

Conrectus[edit]
“ | That which was many came to be one, much like ourselves of flesh, and they are of stone. Crystal, to be exact. Imagine something so beautiful and fractious, so rigidly defined, because they are at risk of losing themselves otherwise. | ” |
—Ethnera Willowtusk, elven poet |
Physical Description[edit]
Conrecti, singular conrectus, are living construct creatures formed naturally through energies leaking from the Elemental Plane of Earth. Their bodies resemble mixtures of slightly translucent igneous rock that each individually pulsate with soft light. These lights move within the stones, giving a rather strange appearance to these creatures. Conrectus limb arrangement is humanoid, but their sensors are different entirely. Each of these glowing stones that make up their body can be equated to something like a "cell" in bio-organisms. These stone cells are photoreceptive and thermosensitive, allowing conrecti to feel heat, cold, and vaguely retain surveillance of their surroundings to a limited degree so long as any parts of their body are exposed. These cells form a collective consciousness. In this way, they are different from hive beings, which are composed of many living creatures controlled by a central mind. Conrecti are composed of unliving parts that became living through their collective.
Because their bodies are wholly composed of these cells, conrecti are usually adverse to obscuring clothing since it limits their cellular perceptions. Much like golems or earth elementals, conrecti prefer to be naked. To protect themselves from the environment, they do sometimes wear loose cloths and wrappings, but these are usually temporary. Due to their irregular sensory system, conrecti have a hard time using items geared for other humanoids, like glasses. An interesting property of these cells is that they are able to absorb healing spells and potions, leading many to say conrecti are composed of actual living rocks unlike, say, a golem. In this way, as well as their origin, conrecti are perhaps closer to elementals, like the galeb duhr, than constructs like golems or even other living constructs like warforged.
History[edit]
The conrecti are believed to be from the Elemental Plane of Earth, or from a point of convergence with the plane, perhaps in some cave or quarry where the Plane momentarily touched the Material in passing. It is believed their fragmented nature came about from a weak affinity and awakening within small stones, too weak to be truly awakened until an electromagnetic pulse brought them together. The circumstances for conrecti to be created is specific and environmentally demanding. Once created, however, conrecti have a strong bonded body and their awakened nature remains in the stone cells that make up their bodies. When a conrectus is killed, their fragments retain consciousness and bits of accumulated experience. These can be used with other pieces to create new conrecti, so they end up with amalgams of personalities, memories, and other experiences accumulated from past collective bodies.
Conrecti often uses pieces of themselves to try and create new conrecti. Because these awakened cell stones are not always available, it is possible for conrecti to awaken if simply enough of their body is made of these cells, even if it is not entirely made of them. These conrecti have more empty minds. It is believed that normal rocks, once bonded with conrecti cell stones long enough, can also become new cell stones through time and experience.
Attitudes and Beliefs[edit]
Conrecti are a race without an abundance of members. They therefore don't really constitute communities. Conrecti may use pieces of themselves to create a new conrectus. Multiple conrecti could donate pieces of themselves all at once to better construct a new individual. Due to the many experiences that have thus been shared and passed on among conrecti, they are a very kindred race towards each other and easily identify one another. For conrecti, their ability to share experiences with each other is considered a great showing of their strength by connection. Even if they are apart, they share something with one another. Cohesion of this kind is something they observe many other races lack, and it sometimes confuses them why races like elves or humans fight so much among one another despite sharing origins and blood. That is not to say conrecti are a very peaceful race. They can actually be quite tribalistic and will not hesitate to protect their own through violence.
Conrectus Names[edit]
Conrectus communicate with one another nonverbally. For verbal speech, conrectus cell stones vibrate in unison at differing frequencies to produce sound. They generally "speak" Terran this way, as Common is more difficult to produce from their speaking method. Given time, conrectus can grasp most sounds, though they are generally not very concerned with things like grammar. For names, conrectus like to take incremental additions of words, usually colors, and string them together. There are usually about three to seven colors in a name. These names are not gendered.
Names: Green-Red-Blue, Magenta-Teal-Cyan-Orange, Vermillion-brown-yellow-indigo-green-white, Green-grey-violet-black-navy
Conrectus Traits[edit]
Living stones came together like cells of a body to create a collective existence
Ability Score Increase. Increase one ability score of your choice by 2 and one by 1, or increase 3 ability scores by 1 each.
Age. Conrecti do not age nor die of age. However, they can be killed. Their stone cells can be used to communicate their stored memories to other conrecti after their passing.
Alignment. Usually, conrecti are neutral. However, they will become chaotic when it comes to protecting those they see as close allies or their own kind.
Size. While conrecti can be very variable, most of them stay around the height of six feet. It is theorized that it is the optimal size for them to maintain their stone cell count and mobility without overwhelming themselves with pieces.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Living Construct. While you appear like a pure creature of stone, represented by the following benefits:
•You have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, and you have resistance to poison damage.
•You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe.
•You are immune to disease.
•You don't need to sleep, and magic can't put you to sleep.
Supersensory. Your body is covered in sensitive stone "cells" that can perceive temperature, textures, and even color, giving you a very sensitive body. You are proficient in the Perception skill.
Unarmored Defense. Your rock-hard body provides you a base AC of 17 (your Dexterity modifier doesn’t affect this number). However, your body is ill-suited to wear armor. You can’t wear light, medium, or heavy armor. But, if you are using a shield, you can apply the shield’s bonus as normal.
Stone Blend. You can hide well in environments of stone where you blend in and suppress the glow of your stone cells. You have advantage in Dexterity (Stealth) checks to hide in places composed of natural stone, like caves or mountain crags.
Cell Glow. As an action, you can emit or turn off the strongest glow setting of your stone cells. You shed bright light in a 20-foot radius and dim light for an additional 20 feet while your light is on. The light can be colored as you like.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Primordial (Terran).
