Changeling Warlock (3.5e Racial Substitution Levels)

From D&D Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

ChangelingECS warlocks can be either chaotic or evil as normal warlocks but are more often chaotic than evil. The amount of political chaos that one can potentially cause would inevitably lead some down the evil path to meet their own ends and in some cases give themselves vast amounts of political power as their doppelganer ancestors have done with their own powers.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are features of the changeling warlock's racial substitution levels.

City Appeal: A changeling warlock is more at home in the hustle-bustle of the city than the wilderness, Diplomacy replaces Jump as a class skill for all warlock levels.

Detect Thoughts (Su): A changeling warlock gives up his ability to detect magic in favor of learning the ways of his doppelganger ancestors. A changeling warlock instead can Detect Thoughts as the spell continuously. The warlock can suppress or resume this ability as a free action. The DC to negate this effect is equal to 12 + the warlock's charisma Modifier.

Mutable Anatomy (Ex) A changling warlock of 8th level gives up his Fiendish Resilience and gains the ability to morph his body in such a way as to be less vulnerable to telling blows. At 8th level the warlock gains a 25% chance that any critical hit or sneak attack against him is instead treated as a normal blow. This improves to 50% at 13th level and to 75% at 18th level. This benefit does not stack with other abilities that negate criticals or sneak attacks such as the fortification enchantment. The negation chance is instead rolled seperately for each factor.

For example, a changeling warlock of 12th level wearing armor of Light Fortification is struck by a rogue. A d% is rolled for Fortification and comes up 53 (higher than 25), still a Sneak Attack. Then a d% is rolled again against Mutable Anatomy and comes up 13 (lower than 25), negating the Sneak Attack and damage is rolled without being considered a sneak attack.

Adventure Hooks[edit]

A Changeling Warlock has assumed control as a emisary or other high ranking noble in a Royal Court. The real emisary has been placed in a magical sleep via a Painful Slumber of the AgesCM invocation. Very few of the other nobles have noticed the replacement but those that have seek help from the players. If they can't locate and save the real emisary before dealing with the imposter there will be a political uprising and, perhaps, war will break out.

Player Advancement[edit]

While any warlock can become a MindbenderCA, the Changling Warlock revels in it like it is born to do it.

Those with a martial bent may find that the MindspyCW is more their style. Because your caster level does not increase while taking Mindspy levels some may feel they give up too much, however the brevity of the class can prove useful to those willing to exploit it fully.
