The subgroup Adûn share a common ancestor with both Humans and Elves as well as at least one other undetermined race. The Adûnaic language is similar to Elvish and shares many of the same runes and root words.

The Adûn lived on a island county which had broken off from the main continent several millennia ago. The island was stricken by an earthquake approximately 2000 years ago. Over the course of the following 500 years, the island slowly crumbled into the sea. During this time many of the surviving people found their way to the mainland, settling in wilderness and less populated areas.

These refuges were known as the Adûn which meant Men of the West or the Men of Westernesse, the island nation from which they originated. In time, they came to be called the Dúnedain.
