Bothan[edit]
“ | If you do business, do it with a bothan. At least you'll know if they try to scalp you. | ” |
—Movir A'Ilya, bothan merchant |
Physical Description[edit]
By Chris Trevas |
The bothan are mammalian humanoids with furry, bestial traits. Their heads appear like a lion or tiger, but with a long face like a horse. They were not known to be particularly tall, usually around 4 to 5 feet in height. Their bodies were covered in special fur that linked to their nervous system, making it change and react to their moods and true inner feelings. Among bothan, this is called Wrendui and is considered a body language known only by bothan or those who have closely studied their cultures. Used correctly, bothan spies can communicate nonverbal messages to others of their kind, though Wrendui also hindered attempts by bothan to be deceitful to their own as well. Both males and females have beards that can also include lush manes, and tapered, pointed ears. Bothans with interbred blood sport a baseline humanoid shape with haunches, hooves, fur, pointed ears and a long tail.
History[edit]
Bothans originate from the planet Bothawui within the Mid Rim. They are known to have perfected the art of gathering intelligence from an early time period before having created the necessary spacecraft to survey nearby planets and travel to new star systems. The expansion of space travel eventually led to the establishment of the Republic, of which the bothans were members. Thanks to their incredible intelligence network, the bothans made Bothawui a hub for intelligence with their spynet. Using these skills for their own gain, the bothans managed to secure colonies of their own. Throughout the many battles and wars in the intergalactic field, the bothans remained largely neutral but threw their lot in with the Republic when it counted.
Society[edit]
Due to the nature of their world being founded on intelligence and spying, bothans are unfortunately paranoid. Their philosophy, known as The Way, as a whole is to put their own individual interests above all else, which has led to the stereotype of them being untrustworthy creatures, even among their own. If one is not for them, they are against them. While this is a widespread belief held among bothan, they did organize into clans, considered the most important social unit in their society. Loyalty to the clan and family added to one's own accumulation of power, thus making it synchronous with The Way.
The Bothan Council is the central control unit, with representatives from all bothan clans. They are known to govern all social, political, economic and security issues of bothan life.
