Astral Fire. The black mage adds its Intelligence modifier to the damage roll of any spell it casts that deals fire damage, and the saving throw DC for such spells increases by 2.

Spellcasting. The black mage is a 9th-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Intelligence (spell save DC 14, +6 to hit with spell attacks). It has the following wizard spells prepared:

cantrips (at will): fire bolt, lightning lure, message, ray of frost
1st level (4 slots): mage armor*, magic missile, sleep
2nd level (3 slots): misty step, scorching ray**, Snilloc’s snowball swarm
3rd level (3 slots): fireball**, lightning bolt
4th level (3 slots): elemental bane, ice storm
5th level (1 slot): cone of cold, immolation**

*The black mage casts this spell on itself before combat.

**The spell save DC for these spells is 16 rather than 14.

Umbral Ice. When the black mage casts a spell of 2nd level or higher that deals cold damage, it regains an expended spell slot of a level lower than that of the spell.

Black mages are spellcasters who focus on the destructive aspects of the arcane. They eschew almost all forms of utility magic and the broader applications of evocation in favor of obliterating their foes with fire, ice and lightning.

Hellish Heat. Through decades of study and intense training a black mage learns to intensify her fire magic. The flames she conjures are hotter than normal and more difficult to quench, allowing her to reduce all but the hardiest of foes to cinders.

Thermoregulation. A black mage is no mere pyromaniac. She masters a variety of spells that can kill with ice as well. Beyond freezing enemies to death, these spells serve a secondary purpose of cooling her off after the immense heat buildup of her fire spells, helping her to conserve her magical energies. In a protracted fight, a skilled black mage will alternate between fire spells and ice spells in order to maximize the number of spells she can cast overall.
