Bellows of Air (3.5e Equipment)

Bellows of air: This item appears to be large, cylindrical bellows made from leather and wood. While inactive, they are deflated and measure around 2 ft diameter and 4 inch height.

They can be activated or deactivated using a command word.

If the bellows of air are activated while being deflated, they will start to slowly expand, while absorbing air from the surrounding. After fully expanding, they contract slowly, without releasing the held air again. The air and its content (e.g. pollution) cease to exist. Essentially, the bellow absorb one gallon of air per round from the surroundings at normal air pressure. The efficiency drops with the rate as the amount of air declines and fully stops at about half of normal pressure at the current altitude. Absorbing air in a confined space makes breathing difficult, but does not suffocate living beings.

Inactive bellows can be inflated by hand. If activated while being manually inflated, they start to slowly contract and release the air in the state of activation (humidity, smell, temperature, impurities, etc). Once empty, they slowly expand again, replenishing their content with the original filling of air at the time of activation. No air is absorbed from the surroundings. At normal air pressure the bellows give off about one gallon of air per round. In an airtight container, the rate of releasing air declines until reaching zero at about twice the regular pressure at the current altitude. Bellows of air can not duplicate any magical effects of the air being duplicated (e.g. no stinking cloud). The air given off has no magical properties. An active set of bellows can be transported. They maintain giving off air with the properties at time of activation.

An active set of bellows can be transported while it keeps inflating and deflating. An active set of bellows is rather quiet, requiring a listen check DC 15 to be heard.

Two sets of bellows can refresh enough air to keep 4 medium-sized living creatures comfortably alive with no or moderate activity (sleeping, eating, reading, moderate work), or two medium-sized living creatures during high physical activity (running, exercising, fighting, heavy work). A large creature counts as two medium creatures, two small creatures count as a medium creature, and so forth. An air tight space (e.g. closed room with sealed doors and windows, collapsed cave) needs two sets of bellows to maintain breathable atmosphere (one creating and one absorbing air). A badly ventilated but not sealed place only needs a single set creating air (e.g. at the end of a mine shaft deep below a mountain).
