Beholden (5e Race)

Scales.png This page is of questionable balance. Reason: The Eye rays grants you five cantrips of Dm's choice, which is kind strange. If these are weakened beholders and you wanted balance, it might be better to just cut down on the free cantrips and then allow player choice. Also, higher ability scores shouldn't grant an additional benefit to this trait. Also, see how Beholderborn (5e Race) handles the eyebeam

Beholden[edit]

A beholder where a human head would be.

Physical Description[edit]

The beholden are a race of people similar to tieflings in the sense that an ancient and powerful being feels that they have a debt to repay. Except instead of a demon or devil, the being is a beholder! The beholden look like humans with long sharp claws instead of fingernails, one eye, and 4 eye stalks each capable of shooting a magical beam.

History[edit]

This Species started out as an experiment performed by the great beholder Xanathar trying to find a way to make people know to repay their debts. After first seeing how pained people felt as they saw their children be ugly one eyed monsters this became the go-to method of attacking debtors. even beholders hate them because they view beholden as extentions of the beholder that created them.

Society[edit]

Beholden are normally considered outcasts or monsters for their one main eye and many eye stalks. normally they act like loners trying to stay away from civilization. Sometimes the beholder that made a beholden will adopt it because they view them as extensions of themselves.

Beholden Names[edit]

Most names for Beholden are usually after beholders that created them. sometimes you can find a small group of beholden that all have the same name. They sometimes change their name to something they find more fitting.

Male: Ohx, Chegohsh, Kholsholn, Thelbiziksh, Daukuqosci

Female: Mahs, Xetrus, Galxaksh, Simluqelx, Ezdrazalks

Beholden Traits[edit]

They take after their beholder family in their eye rays and ugliness
Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score decreases by 2.
Age. Beholden are similarly to beholders, they are considered adults at the age of five years old and live to be about 140-160.
Alignment. Beholden are normally hated and hateful so they tend to go for evil alignments but some manage to see the light.
Size. Beholden have a small height and build, from barely 4 feet to just nearly 6 feet tall. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision. Because of your heritage, you can see in the dark. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Eye Rays. The beholden have four eye rays each taking the form of a random wizards cantrip. If you have a Wisdom score of 16 or higher you can take 2 hours to change an eye ray.
Great Dreamers. Beholden have dreams of great power much like beholders so divination magic has twice the effect on them. Example: If the spell Clairvoyance was cast by a beholden then it will last for 20 minutes and have an area of 2 miles instead of lasting for 10 minutes and having a range of 1 mile.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write in Common and either Undercommon or Deep speech.
