Bahamut's/Tiamat's Fanatic (3.5e Prestige Class)
From D&D Wiki
Bahamut's/Tiamat's Fanatic[edit]
“ | Destroy each and every one of them. Kill Bahamut! Forever live Tiamat! | ” |
—Thorn, Red Dragon, Cohort of Rigald the highest cultist of Tiamat. |
These worshiper of dragon gods are clerics and rarely mages who chose to follow their belief with great enthusiasm. They are highly proficient at eliminating any evil/good dragon to please the one and only dragon god, Bahamut/Tiamat. By devoting their life they are imbued with power directly surging from their chosen deity and therefore lose everything should they ever change their belief. However, this everflowing divine power slowly corrupts their mind and many Fanatics sooner or later start to gain dragon related flaws. The greed for treasure or the habit to try and breath fire are one of many. To become part of Bahamut's/Tiamat's Force one has to please them by acting favorably to one of their aligned dragons. Bahamut's believer must have helped any nonevil-aligned dragon or slew an evil one or done any other kind of act to draw the divine favor of Bahamut. Tiamat, however, is more pleased with killed good-aligned dragons, corruption of any nonevil dragon or helping evil-aligned dragons.
Becoming a Bahamut/Tiamat Fanatic[edit]
Only the most dedicated believers of Bahamut or Tiamat may become a Fanatic. Most Fanatics are drawn from earlier circles of former clerics. But many other magic casters devote their self to the one and only dragon deity.

Class Features[edit]
All of the following are class features of the Bahamut/Tiamat Fanatic.
Spellcasting: At first level and each level thereafter, you gain new spells per day and an increase in caster level (and spells known, if applicable) as if you had also gained a level in a spellcasting class to which you belonged before adding the prestige class level. You do not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. If you had more than one divine/arcane spellcasting class before becoming a Bahamut/Tiamat Fanatic, you must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining spells per day, caster level, and spells known.
Divine Dragon Grimoire (Su): At first level the Fanatic gains a necklace with a hand-sized grimoire wrapped in chains and dragon leather. This grimoire will serve the Fanatic similar to an identification as a Follower of Bahamut or Tiamat. It will also serve as a wizard book except for the changes named. The grimoire starts with 0 pages and can only be filled page for page by either sacrificing 10000 gold or by slaying a dragon. Two Fanatics can't gain an additional page for slaying the same dragon and Bahamut/Tiamat may reward additional pages for loyalty and fulfilled quests. A page is empty until filled with a spell by sacrificing a scroll, corpse or other magical things that are imbued with the spell wanted. A Fanatic may only inscribe a spell once and up to a maximum of his highest spell level - 2. Every spell that the Fanatic wants to be inscribed automatically gets absorbed into the grimoire leaving the previous sacrifice nonmagical. Every spell is prepared but only 1/total level spells are usable per day. Each of these is usable twice. If the Fanatic wants to imbue the grimoire with stronger spells he will need to sacrifice 50000 gold to either Bahamut or Tiamat and the appropriate spell prepared in a corpse, scroll etc. Each grimoire may only contain a maximum of 5, 8-9th level spells and a Fanatic can only add 8th/9th spells if he has at least one 8th/9th spell respectively. This grimoire can be used by anyone and therefore many people try to steal it, commonly other Fanatics of the opposing faction. However only Fanatics of Bahamut or Tiamat are able to infuse new powers to the grimoire and only spells of appropriate spellcaster level may be used. A Fanatic needs at least 1 level in any arcane or divine spellcaster class to use the spells written in his grimoire. Using two grimoires at the same time is possible but they share their usage per day. A Fanatic can also absorb another grimoire, spellbook or similar in his grimoire if there are enough empty pages left to absorb all spells at once. Spells used from a grimoire are cast with the most favored mental modifier(int, wis or cha). The strength a spell is cast with is calculated by 10 + fav. modifier + spell level.
Divine Dragon Enchants (Su): At 1st level and each level thereafter, the Fanatic gains an increasing enchanting skill which makes his weapon and armor seem to be made out of dragon material. The Fanatic is able to enchant his/her own weapons and armor for 1hour/level in Fanatic per day(all at once). Weapon and armor gain +1 enhancement bonus per level in Fanatic(max 5) and additionally weapons gain a dragonslayer enchant which grants the weapon +4d6 on all damage rolls against dragons, while armor reduces any type of damage done by dragons by 2d20. Moreover, the fanatic gains the ability to enchant any type of container(pocket, bag, etc) into a magic item with the properties of a bag of holding 1/level per day. At 6th level, the fanatic can make these enchants permanent for 15000g per weapon/armor and 1000g per container/bag/etc. These items can be dispelled via negate spell while they are not permanent and they can't be used by anyone except other Fanatics.
Dragon Domain (Ex): At 1st level, a Fanatic gains access to the dragon domain. The spells associated with the dragon domain can be selected to fill any domain spell slots the Fanatic has available. If the dragon domain is the character's only domain, he gains the ability to cast a domain spell of each spell level to which he has access once per day, in addition to those spells he already casts. Prestige domains are presented and explained in the Cleric Domains section, beginning on page 107.
Dragonwhisper (Ex): At 1st level, a Fanatic gains a telepathic bond with his dragon deity. Which might or might not give him information about enemy dragons. The deity might give you quests related to them.
Dragon 6th Sense (Su): At 1st level, a Fanatic can concentrate his 6th Sense to locate valuable items with over 1000 gp value, 1/level in Fanatic per day in a radius of 30 feet/level in Fanatic. With this ability, he ignores any kind of obstacle. However magically protected items must succeed a spellcheck of 3/level in Fanatic to stay undetected. This ability informs the Fanatic of the exact location of these items. Using the ability a second time the Fanatic can estimate the exact value of a located item to d100% and its type.
Passionate Talker (Ex): At 1st level, a Fanatic gains allies of the same alignment as his dragon deity. Bahamut's Fanatics gain a +10 diplomacy check for all good-aligned dragons and allies of Bahamut. Additionally, they get a -20 diplomacy check for all evil-aligned dragons and allies of Tiamat. Tiamat's Fanatics gain the same ability vice versa.
Dragon Eyes (Su): At 3rd level, a fanatic gains darkvision with a range of 20 feet, or the range of his existing darkvision improves by 20 feet if he already has the ability. At 4th level and at 5th level, the range of the Fanatic's darkvision extends another 20 feet, to a maximum of +60 feet at 5th level. Additionally, a Fanatic gains +10 on spot checks and appraise checks.
Paragon of Bahamut/Tiamat (Su): At 6th level, a Fanatic gains this favor. As a Fanatic you've done well enough and now you are also one of the strongest of Bahamut's/Tiamat's forces. He bestows upon you a dragon egg of his alliance closest to the Fanatic's alignment. This dragon egg will hatch within 24 hours and can be named. The dragon will have an accelerated growth for the next few weeks until it reaches medium size for a dragon of that type. Once the Fanatic reaches a total level of 20 his dragon accelerates in growth again until it reaches its large size for a dragon of that type. The dragon also matures mentally and can act independently if the situation requires it. It will act as a cohort and also have telepathic speech with his new foster mother/father. The dragon will have the same stats as listed in the Monster Manual. The dragon will not leave his foster parent side while he is still a Fanatic. However if the foster parent acts against the dragons alignment the dragon might try to correct the situation. Moreover the Fanatic and dragon share a special bond that results in death for either one if the other one dies. Reviving either one will revive both. Lastly the Fanatic gains a +10 to ride checks done while riding his dragon.
Ex-Bahamut/Tiamat Fanatic[edit]
Should a Fanatic ever decide to stop believing in his deity or go against other believers of his cult he will lose all access to his Fanatic abilities until he paid 10000 gold as redemption to his deity and redeemed himself with a quest.
Campaign Information[edit]
Bahamut's and Tiamat's Fanatics are highly specialized for dragon hunting campaigns and mostly shine against the opposing alignments. Fanatics are highly diverse and can take any role in a party.
Playing a Bahamut/Tiamat Fanatic[edit]
Combat: Any
Advancement: Fanatics often multiclass into other dragon-related classes. Some dip into ranger to stack the favored enemy bonus.
Resources: Fanatics often get missions via telepathy from their deity. Their deity will provide them with any necessary items needed to fulfill the quest and will also reward them with magical items upon completion. However, quests given by their deity are never easy and more than once already led to the death of a fanatic. A cleric that changes his deity to Bahamut/Tiamat will be given an atonement spell directly by their deity once they did something in their favor.
Bahamut/Tiamat Fanatics in the World[edit]
"Fanatics are unpredictable and dangerous. They hunt dragons for god sake! They can't be normal!" - Claus, human noble
Fanatics are commonly present where there are rumors about dragons. Many of them however, hide their identity.
NPC Reactions: (If they know he is a Fanatic) I don't mind if you hunt dragons and die. However, don't you dare come running back here with a dragon on your tails.
Bahamut/Tiamat Fanatic Lore[edit]
Characters with ranks in Knowledge (religion) can research Bahamut/Tiamat Fanatics to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.
DC | Result |
---|---|
11 | Fanatics of this dragon deities seem to be able to sniff out treasure like a real dragon. |
16 | Some of them are capable of transforming their weapon and armor. These look like masterwork dragon swords and the like. |
21 | It seems as if they have a direct connection to their deity. |
26 | There are some side effects when connecting your very being to a dragon deity. Many of them become corrupted by the dragon's power. They do silly things like hoarding treasure just to bath in it or try spit fire! |
Bahamut/Tiamat Fanatics in the Game[edit]
This characters mainly follow strong heroes in their adventure to gain experience and try to direct their adventure to dragons which they were ordered to kill. In fact, many followers of heroes in the past were believer of Bahamut or Tiamat hiding their true intentions from the group.
Adaptation: A world inhabited by many dragons always comes with faithful believers of Bahamut and Tiamat. This war is not always apparent at first and only a handful of Humans and the like get involved in it.
Sample Encounter: Cleric5/Tiamat's Fanatic6, Cleric with mainly evil aligned domains
