Backgrounds[edit]
Languages[edit]
Common Languages[edit]
Three languages dominate Maztica, though they are believed to belong to the same linguistic group, sometimes called Kukul by the scholars who revere the absent god of knowledge, and share an ideographic writing system. Following the Amnian invasion, the draconic alphabet entered use as a syllabary.
- Azuposi: spoken throughout the Sands of Itzcala and much of the rest of Northern Maztica, Azuposi originates from the Pasocada Basin.
- Nexalan: spoken throughout Central, Southern, and Eastern Maztica, Nexalan was the primary language of Nexal, and thus the nations it ruled over.
- Payit: spoken almost exclusively in Far Payit, Payit once dominated Maztican much like the nation it emerged from.
Exotic Languages[edit]
While the Kukul languages dominate Maztica, a few languages from other linguistic groups have emerged.
- Common: in the 100 years following the Offering of Cordell, the common tongue of Faerûn fell into obscurity, though a handful of scholars keep it archived.
- Tlincalli: spoken by the tlincalli of Lopango, tlincalli is incredibly difficult to pronounce with a non-insectoid mouth, and the complexity of its written system rivals Qualith, with the location of a word on the medium on its own modifying its meaning.
