Physical Description[edit]

By Eric Williams

While called angels, these creatures are not to be confused with the celestials of the same name. These so-called angels are vaguely humanoid entities of the Astral Sea. As such, they varied largely in form. Their size could be as large as an orc, and they are not so much physical beings as energy given form. Made from the drifting essence of the Astral Sea, astral angels were basically the physical forms of the mixture of those energies that accumulated around a consciousness. This form was vaguely humanoid, with varying degrees of similarity to mortals. They vary in details like face and limbs. Most astral angels had only the most basic masculine or feminine features, like hair. Their lower bodies usually trail off into floating energy. They are called angels because when they mature, they gather enough material to grow wings and take to the skies.

History[edit]

From when the Astral Sea was first born, the astral angels were born as a result of the realm's desire to protect itself. Gods and exarchs were drawn together and their dreams brought forth the material that spawned the astral angels. Thus, they were not intentional creations of the gods. Regardless, in addition to guarding the Astral Realm, they became the most fervent followers and servants of the deities. When the Dawn War broke out between the gods and primordials, the astral angels aligned with their gods and combated the primordials and their elemental servants. To this day, the astral angels remain one of the fiercest enemies of the elemental archons for this reason. Since the war, many have taken up the profession of planeswalking as mercenaries, not bound by a morally good alignment like celestials.

Society[edit]

Most astral angels remain within the Astral Realm to serve their gods and protect the sea. They are unaligned creatures that can be very human, serving whom they wish for whatever purposes they desire fulfilled. Thus, some turned to mercenary life and partake in life in the Material Realm. Since most angels start off without wings, they are not guaranteed return to the Astral Sea upon leaving. Many never return, enamored with the lifestyles of those living in the Prime Material Realm. Unlike the gods and exarchs, astral angels are very interested in the dealings of mortals, and will often try to influence them. Some are sent as secret agents to convert humans under the banner of a god. As the Astral Plane comes to be populated with more abominations and newer beings in history like the gith, astral angels see themselves as the standing order between utter destruction of the sea, and a semblance of order.

Personality[edit]

Astral angels have no capacity to fear. They exhibit very human emotions like greed and lust in addition to compassion and fervor. Unlike the celestial angels, astral angels can be of any alignment. They prefer to serve what causes they actually support, rather than be forced into one. Therefore, they only serve the gods they choose, and leave when dissatisfied. This is because being born as a byproduct leaves them with no particular tether to any being as their sole creator, and no god can claim sole ownership of them either. Their main allegiance that binds them is the Astral Sea, from which they come from and shall dissolve back into when they die.

Astral Angel Names[edit]

Astral angels usually speak the language of the gods, Supernal. However, they sometimes take mortal names in Common for the purposes of espionage or reconnaissance, which would be an equivalent of their Supernal name.
