Arcane Fluency (5e Feat)
From D&D Wiki
Arcane Fluency
Prerequisites: Ability to spontaneously cast spells, spellcasting ability 17 or more
Your attunement with magic allows you to freely mix your spell slots. With this feat you gain the following benefits:
- When casting a spell you can choose to heighten it using a pseudo slot. A pseudo slot is created when additional spell slots are combined, but the spell slots stack diminishingly giving only 2/3 of their level rounded up per slot. The slots always stack in an ascending order. You cannot use a pseudo slot to cast a spell whose level is more than the highest level of stacking slots. A pseudo slot has no limit to how large it can get.
- When casting a cantrip you can choose to heighten it using a spell slot. You can heighten it beyond its normal progression. A level one spell slot heightens it by 1 stage of progression, a level two spell slot heightens it by 2 and so on. When you use it on a spell with multiple attack rolls, you only make a single attack while merging the damage die into one.
Example of Slot Stacking:
Example 1: Using a level 3 slot, 2 level 2 slots and 1 level 1 slot
Pseudo slot level: 3 + 2*2/3 + 2*(2/3)2 + 1*(2/3)3 + 1*(2/3)4
= 3 + 1.333... + 0.888... + 0.59259... + 0.3950...
= 3 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 7
= equivalent to a level 7 slot that can be used to cast a 3rd level spell at best.
Example 2: Using a level 5 slot, 2 level 3 slots, 1 level 2 slot and 1 level 1 slot
Pseudo slot level: 5 + 3*2/3 + 3*(2/3)2 + 2*(2/3)3 + 1*(2/3)4
= 5 + 2 + 1.333... + 0.7901... + 0.26337...
= 5 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 11
= equivalent to a level 11 slot that can be used to cast a 5th level spell at best.
Example of Cantrip Heightening :
Example 1: Casting firebolt using a level 2 spell slot with caster level 5
Roll one attack
Damage: 2d10 (fifth level caster) + 2d10 (two stages of advancement using a level 2 spell slot) = 4d10 fire
Example 1: Casting eldritch blast using a level 2 spell slot with caster level 5
Roll one attack
Damage: 1d10 + 1d10 (fifth level caster fires two rays; merged into 1) + 1d10 + 1d10 (two stages of advancement using a level 2 spell slot) = 4d10 force
