Weapon (Shortsword), Very Rare (requires attunement)

Amygdala is a double-edged shortsword approximately 3 ft. in length. The blade resembles a faint, medium purple Damascus pattern, and appears to slowly swirl over the course of multiple hours. The hilt, guard and tang are one piece, and are coated in sparse, faint pinksh-blue symbols of unknown meaning. The handle is wrapped in a strange leather that can be identified as Illithid flesh. The Origin of this weapon is unclear, but its singular purpose appears to be to slay Mind Flayers and their thralls.

Mind-Spear. Attacks with Amygdala ignore resistance to psychic damage, and treat immunity as resistance.

Chosen Quarry. At Bond Level 1, you have an additional +1 on attack rolls, damage rolls, saving throws and spell attacks against Abberations. This increases to +2 at Bond Level 2, +3 at Bond Level 3, and +4 at Bond Level 4. Also at Bond Level 3, you have advantage on saving throws against Abberation abilities and spells.

Sentience. Amygdala is a Lawful Neutral shortsword (Intelligence 20, Wisdom 16, Charisma 12). It can communicate with creatures within 30 ft. through telepathy once it has reached Bond Level 2. Until then, it can only communicate with its wielder. It has blindsight up to 15 ft, and once it has reached Bond Level 4 this becomes truesight.

Personality. Amygdala is nervous, very slow to trust, and will not even speak until it has reached Bond Level 1. When it speaks, Amygdala speaks with the voice of a young elven woman, though it has no preference for pronouns and will be content with she or it. As its bond increases with its wielder, it becomes more friendly, and will begin to offer advice, and will even begin to make jokes and crack wise with the party.

Amygdala's creation is a touchy subject for it, and it will adamantly avoid any questions of its history until Bond Level 3. It was created by an Illithid from the soul of one of its slaves. Though it was intended to be a merciless instrument of death (And certainly took many lives in the hands of its creator), it was recovered from the Illithid's lair when it was slain by a band of adventurers. Upon rescue, Amygdala's mind was restored to normal, but her soul remained trapped within the blade. Instead, Amygdala's enhancements were turned against her creators.

Because of its origin, Amygdala looks fondly on travelling heroes, but has a deep fear and hatred for Illithids and other abberations, and will refuse to be used by one. Amygdala remembers the horrors of the lair, and continues to feel guilt for its actions under the control of the Illithids.

Bond Level. As Amygdala is used by its wielder, it begins to trust and grow with them. Every three levels (Or if a significant amount of time has passed), if the wielder has not given Amygdala reason to distrust them (Consorting with Illithids, rampant unnecessary murder or if she is mistreated), she will gain a level of bonding with her wielder. Levels of bonding can be lost through the conditions above if they become consistent. Effects of leves of bonding can be seen below.

Bond
Level
Effect
Level 0 Amygdala has just met you. Amygdala acts like a regular shortsword, albeit with a faint magcial aura. It is not considered magical while in this state.
Level 1 Amygdala recognizes you as an acquaintance. It will begin speaking to you, and is considered a magic weapon for purposes of overcoming damage resistance.
Level 2 Amygdala recognizes you as a friend. You have +1 to attack and damage rolls while wielding this weapon. In addition, you may make a ranged attack with Amygdala (Range 30 ft.), as the weapon flies from your hand into a target within range. On a hit, the target takes 1d6 piercing damage and 1d4 psychic damage. Amygdala then returns to your hand.
Level 3 Amygdala recognizes you as a close friend. You have an additional +1 to attack and damage rolls with this weapon (+2 total). In addition, you may charge the blade with psychic energy as a bonus action. For one turn, Amygdala gains the reach property, and all attacks with the weapon deal an additional 1d6 psychic damage. You may use this feature again on a short rest.
Level 4 Amygdala recognizes you as its true wielder (And perhaps even more than a friend). You have an additional +1 to attack and damage rolls with this weapon (+3 total). In addition, Amygdala has boosted your resistance to psionic magic. You gain resistance to psychic damage (or immunity if you were already resistant) and you cannot be charmed or frightened as long as Amygdala is within range of telepathic communication.
