Castanets are two carved wooden shells which 'clack' when rhythmically cupped together.The two shells are held in place with either twine or leather cord. Castanets are often used in conjunction with dancing during a performance. The types of wood used for manufacture vary from chestnut to oak.

Castanets can be simple to finely decorated pieces of art.
