Enlightened Samurai (Paladin Alternate Class)

Enlightened Samurai is to Paladin as Ninja is to Rogue.

Making an Enlightened Samurai

Abilities: Strength and Wisdom are paramount for the Enlightened Samurai. Constitution is useful as well.

Alignment: Any Lawful.

Starting Gold: 5d6×10 gp (175 gp).

Starting Age: As Paladin.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the Enlightened Samurai.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Enlightened Samurai are proficient with all simple and martial weapons, and with all types of armor (heavy, medium, and light) but not with shields.

Banner of Law
This functions as a Paladin's Aura of Good, but Lawful instead of Good.

Daisho
Choose two exotic eastern weapons. The Enlightened Samurai gains proficiency with these.

Order
This functions as a Cavalier/Samurai's Order.

Enlightened Grace
At 2nd level, an Enlightened Samurai gains a bonus equal to her Wisdom bonus (if any) on all Saving Throws.

Ki Pool
At 2nd level an Enlightened Samurai gains a pool of Ki Points equal to 1/2 her class level + her Wisdom modifier. As long as she has at least 1 point in her Ki Pool she treats her armor as one step lighter for the purposes of movement speed.

  • By spending 1 point from her Ki Pool, she can make a single additional attack at her full base attack bonus as part of a full round attack.
  • By spending 2 points from her Ki Pool, she can heal herself for 1d6 points of damage for every 2 class levels.
  • By spending 1 point from her Ki Pool, she can grant herself a +4 insight bonus on Diplomacy checks for one round.

Each of these powers is activated as a swift action.

Kiai Smite
At 2nd level, once per day an Enlightened Samurai can focus her energy into a Kiai Smite. This functions as a Paladin's Smite Evil, but the target need not be any particular alignment. She must have at least one point remaining in her Ki Pool to perform a Kiai Smite. At 5th level and every three levels thereafter she may perform one additional Kiai Smite per day.

Combat Style
At 3rd level, an Enlightened Samurai must select one combat style to pursue. This functions as a Ranger's Combat Style, except that she only gets the benefits of the Combat Style Feats when using the specified weapon(s).

  • Archery (Daikyu or Hankyu)
  • Two-Handed Weapon (Nodachi or Naginata)
  • Two-Weapon Combat (Katana and Wakizashi)
  • Mounted Combat (Katana or Naginata or Hankyu)

Banner of Courage
This functions as a Paladin's Aura of Courage.

Purity of Body
This functions as a Paladin's Divine Health

Ki Techniques
At 4th level and every 2 thereafter, an Enlightened Samurai can select one Ki Technique (see below).

Style Strike
This functions as an Unchained Ninja's Style Strike.

Enlightened Bond
This functions as a Paladin's Divine Bond.

Banner of Resolve
This functions like a Paladin's Aura of Resolve.

Banner of Honor
This functions as a Paladin's Aura of Faith, but Lawful instead of Good.

Banner of Order
This functions as a Paladin's Aura of Righteousness, but /Chaotic instead of /Evil.

Enlightened Champion
At 20th level, an Enlightened Samurai's DR increases to 10/Chaotic. Whenever she spends Ki to heal herself, she heals the maximum possible amount. She also gains the ability to enter a state of perfect calm, during which she can take no actions, but she regains Ki at the rate of 1 point per 10 minutes of calm. She cannot use this ability to gain an amount of Ki in excess of her maximum.

Ex-Samurai

An Enlightened Samurai who who becomes nonlawful cannot gain new levels as an Enlightened Samurai but retains all Enlightened Samurai abilities. An Ex-Samurai can retrain without a trainer or a monetary cost to gain the Ronin Archetype by spending 3 days per class feature gained (rather than the usual 5).

Ronin (Enlightened Samurai Archetype)

Alignment: Any non-Lawful. This alters the Enlightened Samurai's Alignment.

Order
A Ronin must follow the Ronin Order. This alters the Enlightened Samurai's Order.

Combat Training
At 2nd level and every two levels thereafter a Ronin gains a bonus Combat feat as a Fighter of her Ronin level. This replaces Banner of Law, Ki Pool, and Ki Techniques.

Intuitive Grace
At 2nd level, a Ronin gains a bonus equal to her Charisma bonus (if any) on all Saving Throws. This alters Enlightened Grace.

Banner of Strength
This fuctions as a Paladin's Aura of Faith, but Adamantine instead of Good. This alters Banner of Honor.

Banner of Independence
This fuctions as a Paladin's Aura of Righteousness, but /Lawful instead of /Evil. This alters Banner of Order.

Liberated Champion
At 20th level, a Ronin's DR increases to 10/Lawful. She cannot be disarmed while wielding her Combat Style's designated weapons, and she gains a +5 bonus on rolls to confirm critical threats with those weapons. This alters Enlightened Champion.
