Innate Spellcasting. The xavi's innate spellcasting ability is Wisdom. The xavi can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:

At will: comprehend languages, detect magic, purify food and drink, water breathing

Sense Portal. The xavi magically knows the distance and direction of any planar portal within 1 mile of it.

Spider Climb. The xavi can climb difficult surfaces, including upside down on ceilings, without needing to make an ability check.

ACTIONS

Multiattack. The xavi uses its Acid Spray. It then makes two attacks: one with its tongue and one with its claws.

Tongue. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d8 + 6) piercing damage.

Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 19 (2d12 + 6) slashing damage.

Acid Spray. The xavi sprays acid in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 31 (7d8) acid damage on a failed save or half as much damage on a successful one.

REACTIONS

Extraplanar Pursuit. When a creature within 30 feet of the xavi that it can see travels to a different plane, the xavi magically travels to the same plane, appearing in an unoccupied space within 30 feet of the creature.

Found throughout the planes, xavis are somewhat intelligent predators who lurk near portals between the planes and attack those who use them. Xavis are reptilian and somewhat resemble crocodiles, but they have six segmented limbs like insects and a long spout that is covered in eyes where the head should be. The spout contains a tongue that ends in a needle-like point, which the xavi extends to smell the air like a snake and at the end of the xavi's tail is a bulbous organ that resembles a flower bud. It is from this organ that the creature can fires a spray of acid to attack foes without needing to draw close enough to risk harm.
Xavis are carnivores and can eat meat of all kinds, but they're very picky about it and may avoid or be attracted to specific kinds of meat. All xavis love mustard and are easily distracted by the scent, especially if it's smeared over raw pork. They always use their innate magic to cleanse any food or drink before they consume it, even though they are immune to almost all poisons and diseases.

Planar Predators. Xavis hunt by finding a planar portal and lying in wait near it until someone comes near. While waiting, the xavi finds a place to hide and enters a state of hibernation to conserve energy. When the portal is used, the hibernation ends instantly and the xavi jerks awake, hungry and ready to eat. Attempting to flee from the xavi's attack doesn't work, as all xavis are capable of a limited form of planar travel.
Xavis aren't evil and are smart enough to barter for what they want, such as food and shiny trinkets. They know others value treasure and magic items and keep any that they find, just in case they might be traded for more valuable things. Adventurers who travel between the planes know to keep extra food on them in case they're waylaid by a hungry xavi.
