Way of the Magic Seals (5e Subclass)
Way of the Magic Seals[edit]
Monks who follow the tradition of seals are arcane masters, who can manifest magical powers trough a combination of ki channeling and hand gestures, in order to produce the desired outcome. These monks are capable spellcasters, that can seamlessly mix magic and combat techniques with ease.
In addition to the ability to perform hand seals, they can create glyphs - written seals that contain the graphic representation of the hand seals, and that can create magical effects when triggered. Is common for those monks to carry with them spell scrolls or items containing those glyphs, and to be able to encase objects by sealing them into scrolls.
- Hand Seals
Starting at 3rd level, you learn how to use hand gestures to channel the ki and cast spells.
- Seal Path. Choose one of the following spell lists: bard, druid, or warlock, and a spell school. You can prepare spells from that list that are from your chosen school. The amount of spells you can prepare equal your Wisdom modifier + half your monk level. You can't choose spells that have a consumable material component.
- Alternatively, you can choose a damage type, instead of a spell school. You can prepare any spell that causes damage from the chosen type from your chosen list.
- The maximum level of spells you can prepare equal to your proficiency bonus -1. For example at 5th level, you can prepare spells of 2nd and 1st level from your chosen list.
- Basic Seals. Choose one cantrip of your choice from the chosen list and school or damage type chosen for your Seal Path. You gain one additional cantrip at 6th and 17th levels. In addition, whenever you cast this cantrip using your action, you can use your bonus action to make an unarmed strike or use any ki feature that require ki points to use.
- Specialized Spells. When you gain this feature, you can choose also two spells from your chosen list. Those spells are known spells and don't count against the maximum number of spells you have. You gain one additional specialized spell at 6th, 11th and 17th levels. The spell must have a maximum level equal to the maximum you can prepare.
- Casting Seals. To cast seals, you don't need to use Verbal or Material components, only Somatic (even if the spell normally doesn't have a somatic component). You must have both hands free in order to cast seals, and you can't cast seals if your hands are hindered in any way.
- To cast a seal, you must spend a number of ki points equal to the level of the spell. You can also spend additional ki, to cast a spell at a higher level, up to your maximum.
- You can cast your Seals a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and regain your uses of this ability upon completing a long rest.
- Seal Ability. Your seals use your Ki save DC as a spell save DC. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
- Scroll Seals
Also at 3rd level, you are capable of using magic seals to encase objects into pieces of parchment. Over the course of a short rest, you can choose one object you can hold in one hand, and be in contact with the object, and a piece of parchment. When the short rest ends, the object is encased on the parchment, and can be summoned by using an object interaction on your turn.
You can carry a number of scroll seals equal to your proficiency bonus at any given time. You must have a calligrapher's supplies with you in order to create a scroll sea.
In addition, you gain proficiency with the calligrapher's supplies.
- Arcane Fist
At 6th level, you can blend seamlessly fighting techniques and spells. Whenever you cast a spell using ki, you can use Flurry of Blows, Step of the Wind or Patient Defense without spending ki.
- Glyph Mastery
At 11th level, you learn how to inscribe your seals into objects. You add Glyph of Warding to your list of memorized spells. This doesn't count against the maximum number of spells you can memorize.
In addition, you can cast this spell once, without spending a spell slot. Once you cast this spell, you can't do it again until you finish a long rest. When you cast this spell using this feature, you can move the glyph without breaking it or triggering it.
- Seal Master
At 17th level, choose one spell of each spell level you can prepare, that is on your spell list. Each of this spells can be cast at its lowest level once, without spending ki or spell slots.
