Way of The Hyena (5e Subclass)
Way of The Hyena
Monk Subclass
This form of martial art, this way of combat and life is not one for the faint of heart. Even mild training of this form demands immense dedication to its craft. The Way of The Hyena teaches its practitioners to take what you can to live, to do what you must to be safe, even if it means ostracism from the greater parts of society. This form is brutally efficient, gruesomely cunning, and grimly terrifying to even witness, at its only creeds are to stay alive and to kill what wants to kill you.
- Hyena's Basics
3rd level
The very foundation of what this form sits on, only progressing from here. At 3rd level, your Ki feature gains additional benefits, as well as an additional option, as listed below:
-Flurry of Blows: When you use Flurry of Blows, you can choose to give up an attack to allow an ally of your choosing within 15 ft to make an attack as a reaction for an additional Ki point.
-Patient Defense: If an attack would be made against you and miss after you used Patient Defense, you can make an unarmed attack against the attacker as a reaction for an additional Ki point.
-Step of The Wind: When you use Step of The Wind, for an extra 2 Ki points, you can add an amount of movement speed equal to your CON mod x 5 ft.
-Hungering Maw: The signature form of this martial art. When you make an unarmed strike, you can spend 2 Ki points to make it a Hungering Maw attack. When you attack with this, it deals 3 of your Martial Arts die in piercing damage. Additionally, the target must make a STR save (DC = Ki save + CON mod). On a failed save, they are knocked prone and you can make an unarmed strike as a reaction for 2 Ki points. You can only use Hungering Maw a number of times equal to your prof. bonus per short or long rest.
- Revel in Carnage, Manic Laughter
3rd level
This capacity for carnage and for pure violence all looks so funny to you. It is quite hard not to laugh at it. Additionally at 3rd level, you gain proficiency in Intimidation and as an action for 3 Ki points, you can start to produce a sound that very much emulates a hyena's "laugh", whether or not it is actual laughter. When you start to "laugh", every creature within 30 ft that can hear you has to make a WIS save (DC = Ki save + Intimidation mod), being frightened of you on a failed save, being able to reattempt the save on the start of their next turn. This "laugh" lasts for a number of rounds equal to your prof. bonus, unless you decide to end it early or are knocked unconscious.
- The Flesh Upon We Feast
6th level
The Hungering Maw has changed you in quite strange ways, so much so that you acquired a taste for live flesh. At 6th level, your Hungering Maw has gained a new feature:
-Whenever you attack with Hungering Maw and the attack lands, you get to heal a number of hit points equal to the damage you dealt to the target + your CON mod.
Additionally, whenever an ally creature is within 10 ft of you, any attack that they would make or you would make would be made at advantage.
- Tireless Esurience
11th level
Your desire to live by any means has granted you an increased physical prowess and the capability to commit taboos. At 11th level, your movement speed increases by +25 ft, you gain a +3 to AC when not wearing armor, and you can safely consume raw, dead, and/or diseased meat while benefiting from Hungering Maw for 2 Ki points and a use of Hungering Maw.
- Strength Through Desperation
17th level
Through many tribulations, your willingness and desperation make you a force to be reckoned with. At 17th level, your Martial Arts die becomes a d12 instead of a d10, your Ki point maximum increases by your CON mod, your Hungering Maw now heals back double what is originally did, and you gain expertise in Intimidation and DEX and CON saves. In addition, when you would be knocked unconscious or outright killed by something or someone and there are no allies within 30 ft of you, you can spend 5 Ki points to instead drop to 1 hit point and can make an attack as a reaction. Alternatively, if any allies are within 30 ft of you and you would be knocked unconscious or outright killed, you can spend 5 Ki points as a reaction before you "die" to allow any ally within 30 ft of you to make an attack against the attacker.
