Watchmaker[edit]

Artificer Subclass

The term “Watchmaker” refers to an artificer who understands and can manipulate the flow of time. They can see the “cogs” in the universe much like a clock and use their magic to make very subtle changes to it for their own advantage. Fittingly, they channel these deeds through a preternatural watch that they themselves create.

Watchmaker Spells[edit]

You always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class, as shown in the Watchmaker Spells table. These spells count as artificer spells for you, but they don't count against the number of artificer spells you prepare.

Watchmaker Spells
Artificer Level Spell
3rd gift of alacrity EGW, zephyr strike XGE
5th fortune's favor EGW, hold person
9th clairvoyance, slow
13th death ward, dimension door
17th steel wind strike XGE, temporal shunt EGW

Chronologist’s Proficiencies[edit]

At 3rd level, you gain proficiency in the History skill, if you don’t already have it, and you can add double your proficiency bonus to any check made with that skill. In addition, you add your Intelligence modifier to Initiative checks and cannot be surprised.

Arcane Timepiece[edit]

At 3rd level, you harness the power of spacetime within a pocket watch known as an Arcane Timepiece. The Timepiece is a Tiny object, and you can use it as a spellcasting focus for your Artificer Spells. You determine its design.

Also, as long as the Timepiece is on your person, you gain access to a number of Continuum points equal to your proficiency bonus, which you can use to manipulate the flow of time. These points can be spent to perform the following effects:

  • You can spend 1 Continuum point to Dash or Disengage as a bonus action.
  • As a bonus action, you can expend Continuum points to increase your walking speed by 10 ft per point spent until the start of your next turn.
  • If you miss with an attack roll or fail a saving throw, you can spend 2 Continuum points as a reaction to reroll and use the greater roll.

You regain all Continuum points when you complete a short or long rest. You can use your bonus action to summon your Timepiece to your hand, as long as it is on the same plane of existence as you. If your Timepiece is ever lost or destroyed, you can magically create a new one using tinker’s tools; you must take one minute to do so. Whenever you create a new Timepiece, the previous one is destroyed.

Quick Casting[edit]

At 5th level, you’ve learned to manipulate time to augment your spells. Whenever you cast a spell on the Watchmaker spell list using the Timepiece as your focus, and the spell has a casting time of 1 action, you can change the casting time to 1 bonus action. You can do this a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier and regain all uses on a long rest. In addition, if the spell requires a saving throw, you can spend an additional Continuum point to force one creature to have disadvantage on the save.

Ahead of Your Time[edit]

Also at 5th level, when you roll for initiative, you can choose one creature you can see within 120 ft of you and swap places with them in the initiative order. Once you use this feature, you must complete a long rest to use it again.

This Moment in Time[edit]

At 9th level, you can tear open the timestream to take peeks into the past. If your Timepiece is on your person, you can spend 1 Continuum point and focus on an area covering a 60-ft radius centered on yourself. You can view any 10-minute period within the past 8 hours. When you do so, you can choose to go back any amount of time (e.g. 1 hour ago, 4 hours ago, etc.) or to a specific event you know occurred (e.g. to the death of a nearby creature, to a tavern brawl). You see and hear everything that happened in the area as if you were actually there. If you attempt to see an event that occurred further in the past than you can see, this feature fails, but your points are not expended.

You can spend additional Continuum points to view even further back in time: 2 points for 24 hours, 3 for 7 days, 4 for the past 30 days, and 5 for the past year.

Timeless[edit]

At 15th level, you only age 1 year every 10 years and you’re immune to effects that would magically age you.

Toppling the Hourglass[edit]

Also at 15th level, you’ve learned to grind the gears of your Timepiece to a halt, causing time itself to cease its march. You can expend all your remaining Continuum points to stop time for everyone except yourself, as per the rules of the time stop spell. You take 1 turn for every Continuum point you expended to activate this feature. Once you use this feature, you must complete a long rest to use it again.
