Warai-kubi-jime[edit]

This mysterious island is one of the larger minor islands in the Lozorian archipelago. Historically, the island has a murky reputation for being a roosting place for alleged pirates. There was only one attempt to settle the island, which failed. Today, it is a penal island, where horrible criminals are sent to die if they cannot be killed on Lozor's main island for any reason. The island is said to be haunted. Eerie laughter emanates through its mountainous forested area through the night.

History[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Warai-kubi-jime is written as "笑い苦人締め," literally meaning "laughing suffering people of closing." The strange name is believed to be a corruption of prior names the island had, as well as the misuse of a local tongue in favor of the Lozor-mandated Shou. There are different plays on the name to show this. For example, without changing the phonetics, it can be written alternatively as "笑い首締め," meaning "laughing neck of closing." Another idea is that the last part of the name "jime" is actually an incorrect pronunciation of "島" (jima), meaning "island." The mistake stuck, in other words.

Some scholars on curses say that the use of "jime" over "jima," that is, "closing" over "island" is not a mistake. It is meant to highlight the distinct danger of the island. It is a "closing" on the lives of the unfortunate souls who are trapped on its shores. No matter what iteration of name the island is called, the characters for laughing ("warai") are always present. This shows that even the ancestors knew of the danger this place presented...
