Veteran (5e Subclass)
From D&D Wiki
Veteran[edit]
Fighter Subclass
Veteran's are seasoned warriors and studied spellcasters. While most are generally of the older variety, some younger individuals just have that much experience to be classified as a Veteran. With enough time and effort, Veteran's can go in multiple directions, from a strong melee-combatant, to a powerful spell weaver, or even a combination of the two!
Veterans can be incredibly flexible; from a long-ranged spell caster while also wielding a bow to being a close range brawler that can enhance themselves and their allies at a moment's notice, the type of Veteran built is highly dependent on the player behind them.
This is an adaptation from a 3.5e homebrew. For the 3.5e version, look at [1]

Through your adventures, you have learned to understand the weave and exert some influence upon it through trial and error, practice and overall experience with it.
- Cantrips
- You know two cantrips of your choice from the bard spell list. You learn additional bard cantrips of your choice at higher levels, as shown in the Cantrips Known column of the Veteran table.
- Spell Slots
- The Veteran table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell’s level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.
- For example, if you know the 1st-level spell cure wounds and have a 1st-level and a 2nd-level spell slot available, you can cast cure wounds using either slot.
- Spells Known of 1st Level and Higher
- You know four 1st-level spells of your choice from the bard spell list.
- The Spells Known column of the Veteran table shows when you learn more spells from the bard list of your choice. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots, as shown on the table. For instance, when you reach 3rd level in this class, you can learn one new spell of 1st or 2nd level.
- Additionally, when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the spells you know from the bard list and replace it with another spell from the bard spell list, which also must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
- Spellcasting Ability
- Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for your bard spells. Your magic comes from your wisdom and experience. You use your Charisma whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Wisdom modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a bard spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.
Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier
Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier
- Linguist
Starting at 3rd level, when you read or listen a language you don't know, you can attempt to understand what is being said or what is written. Make an Intelligence check against a DC of 15. Add a bonus of +1 to the check for each language you know.
On a success, you can understand the content of what is being said or what is written for that conversation or instance of reading.
You also learn the comprehend languages spell. At 15th level, you also learn tongues. These spells doesn't count against the maximum number of spells you can learn.
- Veteran Intuition
At 7th level, you can add your Wisdom modifier as a bonus to all your Intelligence checks.
In addition, you can add your Wisdom modifier to your AC, instead of your Dexterity, while not wearing heavy armor.
- Veteran's Morale
At 10th level, you can let out a rallying war-cry, that gives all friendly creatures within 60 feet advantage to attack rolls and a bonus equal to your Wisdom modifier to their damage rolls with attacks, until the end of your next turn.
Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a short or a long rest.
- No Giving Up
A Veteran's will is indomitable, to the point that even death sometimes cowers in fear. At 15th level, when you are reduced to 0 hit points, you can choose to fall to 1 hit point instead.
Once you use this feature a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.
- Veteran's Luck
Starting at 18th level, once per turn when you miss an attack roll, you can reroll the attack.
