Characteristic: Mad Girty is an athletic human woman, whose hunched poise belies her strength. She seems to apologetically shrink into the corner. She has a round face with tired, bruised eyes and a permanent frown. She often puts her hand over her mouth or to her temple. Sometimes she turns round and round as though she has changed her mind in rapid succession. She speaks disjointedly, as though being constantly interrupted.

When adventuring, she wears hide armor and leggings, with a fur trim (added by her father). Her casual clothes are black and frilly with short sleeves and legs.


Personality[edit]

She sometimes bemoans the fact that she always wanted to be a wizard. She hates music and musicians. She thinks that people wield power should rule with their head, not with their heart. She ritualistically exercises her body and mind every day, and keeps her head shaven. She sometimes tries to joke, but it comes out wrong. She is particularly interested in studying the flora and fauna around the Rift, and hopes to produce her own encyclopedic codex. She likes military organization, as a youth she watched parades and spied on soldiers training in their encampment. She would copy their maneuvers, and draw battle plans in the dirt.

Faith
Mad Girty sometimes prays to Garanox. She admires the stories told of what he had to overcome, the battles fought in his name, and his physical beauty.

  • Logic. We all make bad decisions through emotional reasoning and biases. I must overcome these trappings.

Flaws
  • I become confused when there's lots of different sounds, such as a noisy tavern or a pitched battlefield. At its worst, I clamp my hands over my ears and yell. Any kind of music is particularly hideous to me.

Backstory[edit]

Mad Girty was born Gertrud Goldenaster, to a large family in Melnir. Her father, Alfons Goldenaster was a successful furrier. Gertrud spend most of her youth in libraries and practicing hedge magic. She was quiet, barely seemed to be there, spoke in mumbles. As there was a need for battle wizards among the allied armies, Alfons sent her to the wizard's college to become an apprentice. She took to the wizardly life enthusiastically, and also pushed herself physically in preparation for her future role. She prayed to her war god and ritualistically trained. As she grew into womanhood, becoming stronger and understanding more mysteries, it was clear among her peers that this strange girl was destined to become a very fine military mage.

Then she read the wrong book.

It was there, in a previously empty space on the shelf in the college basement library, where the outdated and unpopular tomes were kept. Six Complex Discords was the projection of an otherworldy entity, an Old One. Gertrud's heart sank as she devoured the text, knowing she would be unable to stop reading. All her spellcraft was gone by the last page, replaced with its voice: a wave of tonal clusters and screeching disharmony, interleaving and knotting. Now they were connected.

It was furious. It had chosen the wrong servant. It needed a force of personality, someone of clear voice, someone with the soul of a song. It had somehow been conjoined with this shuffling, inarticulate human. Over the next few days, it poured noise into Gertrud's head, whispered secrets, hooted the music of aeons gone. She struggled to focus on anything, failed lessons, disturbed her master with confused speech. Her spells had gone but then came back, but they were different, weird, made upsetting sounds like buried violins. It wasn't long before her master intuited that her magic wasn't coming from study, but from a pact... which was frankly considered cheating. Now nicknamed Mad Girty by her peers, she was summarily expulsed from the college.
