User:Guy/Splat/Throwing an Object
From D&D Wiki
With your Use an Object action, you can throw a nonharmful object like a potion or key. You can throw the object to a target within 20 feet of you without an ability check, or up to 60 feet with a successful DC 10 Strength or Dexterity (Athletics) check. Your narrator might also call for a check if the throw is otherwise difficult, such as throwing in a crosswind or throwing in a high lob, and assign a DC appropriate to the difficulty.
On a failed check, the object fails to meet the intended target. Typically the object lands 5 feet away in a direction determined by the narrator.
Any creature in line of the throw can use a reaction to catch the thrown object, if the creature has a spare hand (or equivalent). A contest (or "opposed ability check") can be used to pass the object around an intercepting creature you can see.
Generally you can't throw an object you need two hands to lift, nor any object with high air resistance such as a feather or a paper sheet.
