Oath of Dragons[edit]

Paladin Oath

For countless ages, mankind has always held both a reverence and, for some, a fear of the great dragons that inhabit the planes. In some settings, Paladins that have sworn the Oath of Dragons have chosen to emulate the power of these great beasts in order to mete out justice and retribution throughout their world. In others, these Paladins might serve as direct warriors or guards for powerful and intelligent dragons. Regardless of origin, the Oath of Dragons gives Paladins a measure of draconic power to wield against their enemies. Due to their varied natures, there is no singular set of tenets and beliefs that followers of this Oath adhere to. In settings where these Paladins serve as guards and warriors under the command of dragons, for example, they might be bound to adhere to the core beliefs and ideologies of their dragon masters. Work with your DM to determine a set of tenets that work for your campaign's setting and character concept.

Draconic Pledge[edit]

Unlike many of the other paladin oaths, taking up this oath has a number of benefits that alter some of the base abilities you receive as you level in this class. Beginning at 3rd-level, when you select this Oath, you choose a Draconic Pledge. This Pledge represents what type of dragon you have either sworn fealty to or that your divine magic is being influenced by. Refer to the table below for the available Pledges you may choose from and their corresponding damage type. At your DM's discretion, these damage types may be changed or options may be removed or added.

Your Pledge offers you a number of benefits:

  • You have resistance to your Pledge's damage type
  • You may replace the damage type of your Divine Smite feature with your Pledge's damage type
  • At 11th-level, you may replace the damage type of your Improved Divine Smite feature with your Pledge's Damage Type

Features[edit]

Channel Divinity[edit]

Your acceptance of this Oath grants you the following options to use with your Channel Divinity feature:

  • Turn Dragons - You present your holy symbol and denounce any draconic entity not aligned with or born from your chosen Draconic Pledge. Each of those creatures that can see and hear you, within 30 feet of you, must make a Wisdom saving throw against your spell DC or be turned for 1 minute or until it takes damage. A turned creature must spend its turns trying to move as far away from you as it can, and it can't willingly move to a space within 30 feet of you. It also can't take reactions. For its action, it can use only the Dash action or try to escape from an effect that prevents it from moving. If there's nowhere to move, the creature can use the Dodge action.
  • Draconic Weapon - As an action, you may imbue your weapon with the essence of your Draconic Pledge. For 1 minute, whenever you deal damage with that weapon to a creature, your weapon deals additional 2d8 damage of your Pledge's damage type to that creature equal to your Charisma modifier. This effect ends prematurely if you sheathe the weapon or let go of it.

Aura of Scales[edit]

At 7th-level, you project an aura of draconic energies. All creatures within 10 ft of you have resistance to the damage type of your Pledge. At 18th-level, this radius extends to 30 ft.

Take Flight[edit]

At 15th-level, you can take to the skies on draconic wings. As a bonus action on your turn, you can manifest spectral, incorporeal and weightless dragon wings, for 1 hour, that shimmer like the scales of dragons. You can dismiss the wings early (no action required). While you are not wearing heavy armor, you have a flying speed equal to your normal movement speed. While you are wearing heavy armor, you instead have a flying speed equal to your normal movement speed - 10 ft. If you already possess a flying speed when you manifest these wings, you instead increase that movement speed by 30 ft (or gain the ability to fly at a speed of 20 ft while wearing heavy armor).

Avatar of Dragons[edit]

At 20th-level, you are a champion of draconic energies or your dragon masters, which grants you a number of benefits.

  • You have complete immunity to the damage type of your Pledge. Additionally, you gain a +1 to your Armor Class as if your skin is as hard as scales.
  • When you use your Channel Divinity: Draconic Weapon, the extra damage dealt becomes twice your Charisma modifier and ignores resistances.
  • You also gain the ability to perform a dragon's breath attack, as an action on your turn, that affects a 30 ft cone. All creatures within the cone must make a Dexterity save against your spell DC, taking 10d6 damage of your Pledge's corresponding type upon a failure, or half as much damage upon a success. Once you use this breath attack, it must recharge before you can use it again. To recharge your breath attack, roll a d6 at the start of your turn - on a '5' or '6', your breath weapon recharges.
