The Lich[edit]
My plan is to create a "Lich King" so to speak using SRD/D&D Wiki materials only. Basically, he should be a mini-optimization of number of followers. He will be epic level, but not above level 30, and not super powerful himself.
Class levels[edit]
- Cleric 12
- Lichbound 5
- Hierophant 5
- Cleric 5
Notes:
- Effectively a level 22 Cleric for spells known
- Casts spells as a 31st level caster (without items)
- +4 turning checks and turning damage (also another +4 synergy on turning checks)
- This means even on a 1, he can rebuke/command his HD + 4
- Requires Craft Wondrous Item and a Metamagic feat -- other feats are open
Feats[edit]
- Scribe Scroll 1st
- Skill Focus (spellcraft) 1st, bonus
- Craft Wondrous Item 3rd
- Leadership 6th
- Brew Potion 9th
- Empower Undead 12th
- Gravechill Undead 15th
- Iron Skeleton 18th
- Undead Mastery 21st
- Epic Leadership 24th (houseruled to let followers be undead minions and necromancers)
- Legendary Commander 27th
Other Possible Feats[edit]
- Strengthen Undead (requires strength domain)
- Craft Epic Rod
Items of Interest[edit]
- Rod of Restless Death
- Removing the lame "slay living" mod would make this cost around 350,000 for 42 HD or 500,000 for 60 HD.
- Assuming he makes these himself, he could get 8 60HD rods for 2,000,000 gold, getting an extra 480HD of minions.
Stats[edit]
When I make NPCs I find it lame to give ones that made it to level 30 the same array as ones that made it to level 5. Whatever, PCs can complain all they want about balance -- he is an NPC. Like a monster, he is only there for an encounter at a time, not the whole game.
- Str 7 -- He is weak and frail. By the time he is a full lich, he is barely be able to stand (+5 from wishes, -6 from aging)
- Dex 10 -- +5 wishes, -6 aging = 9
- Con 9 -- +5 wishes, -6 aging, undead = --
- Int 14 -- +5 wishes, +3 age, +2 lich = 24
- Wis 16 -- +5 wishes, +3 age, +2 lich = 26
- Cha 18 -- +5 wishes, +3 age, +6 levels, +2 lich = 34
Variant Rules Used[edit]
- Retroactive Skill Points -- Just to make it easier to calculate Skill Points

Hitpoints[edit]
Easy! 27d12 = 175. I could easily raise this, but that would defeat the point I think. He is supposed to be frail.
Saves[edit]
- Fort: 8 + 1 + 4 = +13
- Ref: 4 + 1 + 1 -1 = +5
- Will: 8 + 4 + 4 + 8 = +24
BAB[edit]
+9 + 2 + 2 = +13
Using fractional: +9 + 2.5 + 2.5 = +14
Meh -- I'll just use the normal BAB. It's not like he is a combat character.
Spells[edit]
Casts as a level 22 cleric, so he gets the full complement of cleric spells at level 20. I will deal with spells per day once I figure out equipment.

Fear Aura (Su) | Liches are shrouded in a dreadful aura of death and evil. Creatures of less than 5 HD in a 60-foot radius that look at the lich must succeed on a Will save or be affected as though by a fear spell cast by a 27th level sorcerer. A creature that successfully saves cannot be affected again by the same lich’s aura for 24 hours. |
Paralyzing Touch (Su) | Any living creature a lich hits with its touch attack must succeed on a Fortitude save or be permanently paralyzed. Remove Paralysis or any spell that can remove a curse can free the victim (see the Bestow Curse spell description). The effect cannot be dispelled. Anyone paralyzed by a lich seems dead, though a DC 20 Spot check or a DC 15 Heal check reveals that the victim is still alive. |
