DESCRIPTION |
| Dry, black mist constantly rises from the covers of this large, iron-bound book. Scribed inside are various texts and theories concerning the Plane of Shadows.
The tome acts as a focus for casting certain spells related to the shadow subschool. When opened and used with the spells greater shadow conjuration, greater shadow evocation, shades, shadow conjuration or shadow evocation, the potency of the spell is one-fifth (+20%) stronger than normal for the duration of the spell. If the book is closed, the potency immediately reduces to its normal value. The book can also be used as a focus when casting a summon monster spell. Any creature summoned gains the shadow simple template (Advanced Race Guide) instead of the celestial or fiendish template and remains until the duration of the spell ends or the book is closed, whichever is shorter. Once the book has been closed, a spell must be cast anew to benefits from being focused by the umbral tome.
