Tarazak was a rich and selfish baron who was cursed by the local river gods for pollutive activities under his supervision. As a result, he was cursed to take this hideous appearance of a frog. Formerly human, Tarazak took great pains to hide his change. He paid great sums for powerful and knowledgeable wizards and clerics to have them heal him and restore his form. However, it was no simple task to undo such a divine curse. Tarazak learned of a possible cure: the lives of 1,000 young, human women, one each day, at midnight. He had to consume their body and soul. Desperate, he began to order that all young, human women within his domain had to be bought to his castle on their 16th birthday. There, they would be subdued and kept in grotesque frog eggs in a half-dead, half-alive state, waiting for him to consume them. It is said he already consumed over 100 women this way, and his subjects who object are swiftly silenced. These heinous crimes, along with his transformation, have made the baron a scourge in his own domain, and he seems to be getting more insane with each passing day.

Combat

As perhaps a positive side of Tarazak's transformation, he gained a magic source similar to sorcerous blood in addition to his horrendous appearance. After learning of his cure, he has only learned how to further use them with devastating effect and malicious intent. While he appears slow and merely sly, he also possesses enough grace to subdue unwary opponents. Tarazak's primary weapon is his tongue when he wishes to kill anyone, as it is able to pierce even armor. His magic is more for providing smokescreens or placing opponents at a disadvantage such that he can pick them off. Tarazak aims primarily for any females first, though not to kill so much as just incapacitate. For males, he will kill them if they vex him.

Tarazak's Lair

Within his lair, Tarazak has a challenge rating of 11 (7,200 XP). His lair consists of his main castle, surrounded by a murky lake. His castle has been renovated to be almost maze-like inside. His guards are only situated about the periphery, allowing him to do as he pleases. Several rooms are dedicated to storing the frog spawn bubbles where the women are imprisoned in a state of stasis. The ripest ones are deeper inside, while fresher victims are located in rooms closer outward. These rooms are all connected by labyrinthine hallways that Tarazak can use to his advantage when intruders come. He can efficiently skulk about the castle and use magic and traps to slow down attackers.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), Tarazak can take a lair action to cause one of the following magical effects; he can't use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • Tarazak absorbs the soul of a nearby incubating maiden and regains 3d8 hit points. For storytelling purposes and ambience or gravitas, feel free to give all the girls identities and have the players know who is eaten. Because Tarazak consumes the girl's soul, she also cannot be revived by any force short of a wish spell or divine intervention, even if Tarazak himself is killed.

Regional Effects

Tarazak exerts control over his lair in the following ways:

  • Creatures within the lair feel as though the hallways and rooms are much longer or bigger than they appear, and the space elongates as the ends are approached.
  • Tarazak can pinpoint the location of every creature in their lair to within 10 feet.

When Tarazak dies, all of these regional effects fade immediately.
