Talk:Wisplings (3.5e Race)
Please do not edit this page beyond typos without discussing it here. I will make any changes for good ideas. I am not good with hyperlinks however so if you would like to link the spells and various mechanics to the relevant pages on this wiki feel free to do so. Balance[edit]
This seems to be of decent balance. Made of Magic needs some more clarity, and Flux Points should require a little more work to get (e.g. (5+cha mod) * HD). As for ECL, ECL is effective character level, so LA + racial HD + class levels. Character Level or HD refers to racial HD + class levels. Racial HD act as class levels in a certain race, so a Doppelgänger Fighter 2/Rogue 3 would be ECL 13, HD 9, and have 4 levels of monstrous humanoid, 2 levels of Fighter, and 3 levels of Rogue. As for LA, 2-3 should be fine. Because of the pseudo-class Flux thing i would go for 3. --Salasay Δ 17:43, 13 October 2014 (MDT)
- Your point on Flux is a good idea. It definitely ties in with them being stronger with more magical talent. It will also limit the use of Incorporeality and Energy Transfer to beyond first level characters. Thanks for the explanation on the HD stuff. I seem to have thought Racial HD were the same as LA. Would you mind specifying what seems confusing? I tried to make the whole Made of magic thing clear. Mordred the dark (talk) 18:05, 13 October 2014 (MDT)
- If this is balanced against standard 3.5 format I would give it an ECL of 4. Multiple abilities (including higher level spells) the ability to affect incorporeal opponents (force effects negate miss chance) and attribute points lead it to having a higher number than 2. If you throw in some negatives it could be reduced to a 3 but right now it has a bunch of bonuses with no real negatives other than an attribute reduction. Tivanir (talk) 08:57, 16 October 2014 (MDT)
- i was worried about that but i had figured that since they can be weakened by, or at least have their powers drained by, anti-magic effects that any caster with a decent knowledge check could use against them. It also means that Inflict spells will deal more damage (even if their opponent has no clue about their weaknesses) and other negative energy effects that normally wouldn't deal damage do so in addition to their normal effects. While the negative energy weakness is negated theoretically by positive energy, if an Inflict spell kills because of that extra punch no healing in the world (besides resurrection type spells) can counter that. While LA is something that is harder to determine without playtesting, my fear is that if we used a higher LA a level 2 Wispling is going to be in a campaign with level 5 casters many of whom can cast dispel magic, a 3rd level spell. Using the rules of Made of Magic, a 2nd level Wispling even with 18 CHA would only be able to negate one negative level (i might change the wording to allow 5 or more points to round up if that's all they have left) but Dispel Magic could cause 3 negative levels leaving the Wispling with 0 levels (which i'm fairly certain is dead). This happens even if it's a friendly wizard casting the area effect version of dispel magic and it would suck if your character just up and died like that. Meanwhile where i have it now the same Wispling can be level 3 with at least 14 CHA and be able to negate 2 negative levels (or all 3 with that really good idea and 18 CHA).
