Talk:Thronin (4e Deity)
From D&D Wiki
Legalities[edit]
The name Moradin is not OGL, and as such we can't really host this for risk of it being deemed infringing on WotC's product identity. Under a different name it may be fine, but under this one its not really legal. Hooper talk contribs email 20:00, 17 September 2009 (MDT)
- I read the requirements of the OGL when discussing names and I believe that the Moradin, Variant does not violate the OGL per section 7 because DnDwiki is not a publisher.
- Under the Open Game License [1] the use of a Moradin, Variant would be allowed and covered or else entire sections of the wiki are also in violation which could be a serious problem for us all.
- Similar examples would be [2]
- I contacted wizards directly and the rep from the legal department stated that Wotc does not own the copyright for "Moradin", they have a limited use license from Game Designer, Jim Ward, Fast Forward Entertainment and are not able to grant permission to use the name. I will gladly call him to ask for permission or suggestions. Which means I would need to contact him for permission if I intended to publish the Stormforge setting. However, I have "Zero" intention of publishing the setting.
- The question then would be does using the name on DnDwiki count as publishing?
- In the mean time, I will begin the search for a replacement name. Kildairem 21:05, 17 September 2009 (MDT)
- First: wow. I'm glad you delved that deep into this. If all that is true, then I'd say that yes looking into the exact definition of publisher and whether this site falls into it would be the top priority, because if we don't then this would be fine. But better to be safe than sorry. Hooper talk contribs email 21:11, 17 September 2009 (MDT)
- Hooper, Looking deeply into things comes from digging through military regulations for the last 18 years. Army Regs are all overly ambiguous.
- Green Dragon, suggestions or weighing in on this possible issue?
- Anyone else taking the time to read this, I would appreciate name suggestions, to still have the feel of a dwarven creator / Odin All-father figure. Kildairem 21:19, 17 September 2009 (MDT)
- One of my players suggested the name Thronin, so that is what it will be. Kildairem 01:28, 20 September 2009 (MDT)
- Thanks for changing the name by the way. --Green Dragon 16:41, 20 September 2009 (MDT)
- I did contact Fast Forward Entertainment, the legal rep. stated that they would authorize use of the name "Moradin, Variant", if sent them a certified letter with the request to make it official and then they would then send me the paperwork authorizing the limited use of the name. Much easier to just change the name and save the headache, but nice to know that they would be willing to allow it's use. Kildairem 16:58, 25 September 2009 (MDT)
