Talk:Student of Magic (5e Background)
So... let's say I decided to play a halfling rogue student of magic and didn't take the arcane trickster archetype. What kind of character would that be? A failed student? Someone who refuses to use magic for some reason? This background really only works with spell casting classes. --Kydo (talk) 00:49, 25 July 2015 (MDT)
- I'm imagining someone like Rincewind. He went to all the lessons, he wore the pointy hat, he hung out at the library... but he just can't cast spells! Marasmusine (talk) 02:13, 25 July 2015 (MDT)
I have a question, what practical use does the book about arcana have?
- That's a roleplaying item. Its purpose is to be used as a prop. So, as far as "practical use" goes, that depends entirely on how creative you are, and how open to suggestions your DM is. --Kydo (talk) 22:52, 27 September 2016 (MDT)
- One should be encouraged to be quite specific about this book, say, "An Inquiry Into The Nature And Causes Of Nonlinear Transmutative Aether". I could make a random book title generator...Marasmusine (talk) 03:41, 28 September 2016 (MDT)
- Arcane Book Titles (DnD Other) here you go. Marasmusine (talk) 04:24, 28 September 2016 (MDT)
Thank you very much for your answer, actually I talked about this with my dm and he said that I could roll with advantage on my arcana rolls.
Skill & Tools Proficiencies[edit]
I kinda understand Arcana and History. What I don't understand is why religion is listed.--209.97.85.48 18:42, 27 January 2016 (MST)
- Probably because religion is a form of magic in D&D. There's not much "religion" to it in the contemporary sense of what faith is. --Kydo (talk) 12:15, 28 January 2016 (MST)
Potionmaker's lab is a combo of Alchemist's supplies, Herblist's kit and Poisoner's kit. It costs 500 GP. --Redrum 18:53, 21 March 2018 (MDT)
Elminster[edit]
Could Elminster be the ULTIMATE student of magic?--209.97.85.48 18:40, 2 March 2016 (MST)
Sage?[edit]
Is the Student of Magic a VERY specific form of sage?--Redrum 18:42, 16 March 2016 (MDT)
Organization[edit]
I have an idea for an organization for the Student of Magic (or a variant) called Fellowship of the Fluids. It's main goal is to advance the "science" of alchemy and magical potions. It's secondary goal is to act as a international craft guild. It's products are elixirs, potions, magical oils, alchemy jugs, sovereign glue, universal solvent, and Nolzur's Marvelous Pigments. --Redrum 17:54, 13 April 2016 (MDT)
Topics[edit]
Would the background cover Fantastic beasts as a subject of study? --Redrum 14:04, 22 December 2017 (MST)
Would the background cover wild magic as a subject of study? --Redrum 18:37, 2 May 2018 (MDT)
