Talk:Soul Gem (5e Spell)
From D&D Wiki
Thoughts[edit]
I think this is interesting and hard for me to define its balance. The overall idea is your turning souls into fake gems? I think that these gems should be described as looking like 10 gp gems of your choosing so that people aren't creating 1,000 gp looking gems. That might further a murder hobos motive. I think the duration should also be instantaneous because 10 minutes would mean that the gem disappears after 10 minutes. I hope others weigh in because I think it is a unique addition that I can't think of what to compare this too. ~ BigShotFancyMan 08:26, 27 March 2019 (MDT)
Sorry This Response is so Long[edit]
First off, thank you for your response, critiques, and questions because getting feedback is the only way I can become better and make this and future spells better. I actually did not mean to put the spells duration for ten minutes, I meant to put it as one, so I'll have to go back and change that. Thank you for pointing that out. The reason the spell has a one minute duration instead of being instantaneous is because, as stated in the spells description, once the player casts the spell on a creature, the creature must be killed in one minute in order actually capture that creatures soul. If they do not kill them in that time frame then they don't get the soul and will have to recast it. They also cannot cast this on a creature that is already dead because the spell states they have to be killed while the spell is still active. The gems do not actually have any monetary value to them and perhaps I should take out the part about the investigation check against the spell DC since it is not meant to be creating an actual gem, they are just meant to be devises that hold souls in them, please let me know what you think. I choose the container of the soul to be a gem because flashy, expensive looking gems that are affixed to your property can make for some interesting situations. For example if someone wanted to have the gems affixed to their sword or have the gems adorn their cloths, musical instrument since this is a bards spell, or anything else that is always on display (because it must be affixed to something on your person), then that player is going attract a lot of attention, good and bad, so the DM can potentially punish players that go around murdering everyone to get their souls by putting unwanted attention on them because they are flaunting, what looks to be real and expensive gems, and because of that they could find themselves with a bounty on their heads from a very dangerous individual or criminal organization, or the DM could also use this spell on players too, making the steak much higher for them too. When I first thought of this spell, I imagined more fiendish and/or devilish creatures using this spell so, to me, this spell would be a better fit for evil creatures in an evil campaign. Please let me know what you think about all this and I hope I cleared somethings up.--WaterTurtle 09:11, 27 March 2019 (MDT)
