Soldier comparison to other classes[edit]

In terms of balance and comparison to other classes, it's sort of a weaker striker/controller type class. I would peg it as being similar to the paladin blackguard which does extra damage equal to it's charisma modifier when it has combat advantage. The purpose of the soldier is to be a sort of jack of all trades who can do everything and use a broad range of weapons. This puts them in a realm to being similar to the assassin or executioner, but not identical to their format structure obviously. They can do a lot of damage when all the cards align. They're weaker than the ranger, but make up for it with a lot of secondary abilities. It also fills a lot of niches I felt like weren't filled by the fighter or ranger in other games. They're all to hyper specialized. We don't get a good shield striker, or a good shield and spear soldier, or an armored archer and that sort of thing which we do actually see in medieval times. I kind of wanted a more general purpose class, and the soldier fits that perfectly.

One thing of note is they are trained in all superior weapons, which no class does but is kind of neat. Although not directly mentioned, Soldiers can also use guns quite well, which are a homebrew D&D wiki thing and is worth exploring
