Talk:Simiosaurus (5e Race)

I've been asked to evaluate this race. It should be obvious to anyone who has looked at the PHB races that this race is hugely overpowered. However, I will go through the traits using my newly revised Marasmusine Meter (5e Guideline). The target score is between 2 and 3.

  • Ability Score Increase (0) - standard spread.
  • 40' Speed (0.5)
  • Climb (0.33)
  • Darkvision (0.5)
  • Advantage on broad use of skill check (0.5)
  • Armor proficiency (0.5)
  • Beast type (0.25) - This makes the PC immune to some types of spells but potentially vulnerable to other types of effect
  • Two skill proficiencies (0.33 + 0.33)
  • Communication with narrow range of creatures (0.25)
  • Primal weapons (0.5) - The bite is useful for a low-level monk, and the claws allow even a wizard to engage in two-weapon fighting while still being able to cast spells.
  • Tool proficiency (0.33). Honestly the extra crafting stuff should be removed, as this is already covered by the crafting rules in the PHB (the values are also off. 5 gp worth of materials to create a spear?).
  • Pounce (0.5)
  • Arboreal: Advantage on two different skills in narrow field (0.33 + 0.33)
  • Proficiency bonus on grapple escapes (0.25)
  • I'm not sure how to interpret pack tactics: are you getting the proficiency bonus in addition to your normal proficiency bonus? If so, this is worth (1)
  • High Ground: Advantage on check in narrow field (0.33)
  • Languages (0). I'm not sure how widespread simiosauran is, as it is not one of the languages in the PHB. If it is common in the campaign, this is worth (0.25).

Total = 7.31

Conclusion: Identify which traits are "core" traits, totalling between 2.5 and 2.75. Delete all the others or move them to racial feats. Alternatively have a core of traits worth about 2, and bundle the others together into subraces of about 0.5 to 0.75 each. Marasmusine (talk) 07:47, 8 June 2019 (MDT)

Checking value of traits after first pass of edits ([1]), using Marasmusine Meter (5e Guideline):

  • Standard ASI (0)
  • Fast speed with climb (0.5)
  • Hawk Eye: Darkvision (0.5) and Advantage on common skill check (0.5)
  • Lithe: Armour proficiency - Probably should be removed as it has dubious benefit. All classes have their own method of AC, be it through armor proficiency, unarmoured defense, or spells.
  • Close Cousins: Two skill proficiencies (0.66) and a freebie.
  • Primal weapons (0.25)
  • Simiosaur craft and training: tool proficiency (0.66)
  • Pounce (1) - major attack, especially since you get two claw attacks
  • Arboreal (0.33): advantage on sub-use of a skill
  • Slippery (0.33)

Total is 4.74. The target is 2.5 to 3. So some more traits have to go. Marasmusine (talk) 15:08, 2 March 2020 (MST)
