Talk:Shadowhunter (5e Class)

- Well, it's quite strange.
- The class has two "common" saves (which are Dex, Con, Wis). All the PHB classes have a "common" and an "uncommon" (Cha, Int, Str). There's nothing against the rules to have Dex and Con, but this should be considered "worth" a feature when looking at overall balance.
- You give them proficiency with all martial weapons except whip, then give them proficiency with whip at 6th level.
- How long does Angelic Power last for? How many arrows can I empower in the long rest? (e.g. could I put runes on thousands of arrows and distribute them to a militia?)
- Use lowercase d for dice. Angelic Power should be worded: "An arrow or bolt with an angelic power rune deals an extra 1d8 radiant damage to undead or fiends." (then say how the damage increases with level)
- Seraph Blade. Where does it come from?
- I get whip training, Monomachia and Seraph Blade. I am now either using a whip or a seraph blade or an unarmed strike as my weapon, the other features are "wasted". I am also not sure why you would use unarmed strike when you have the other weapon options, but at least you get it on a level where you get an ability score improvement too.
- Actually, there's no point in using a whip either, at this point my seraph blade is dealing an extra 2d8 damage on top of base damage.
- Catch missiles is like the monk feature, but here it's automatic instead of a damage reduction, so it's more powerful. Is that intended?
- I start with 3 skill proficiencies, which is pretty good, then at 7th level I get another 3 skill proficiencies?
- And now longsword mastery. If I've invested in using longswords, then I'm using Strength as my principle ability score, so adding finesse isn't useful. If I've gone for a Dex build, I'm using two shortswords/scimitars , or a rapier (or whip, I guess).
- Seraph Blade mastery.. so yes, at this point I would definitely say the damage output is too high. I'm getting extra attack and extra radiant damage and now a +2 on top of that.
- Agility and Grace. Advantage is a circumstantial benefit, not a permanent bonus.
- Observation and Deduction. Another 2 (effectively) skill proficiencies, bringing the total to 8 skills. Just to be clear, the bard and the rogue (the most "skilled" classes in the PHB) have 6 (with the college of lore) and 4 skills respectively.
- I've not looked at the runes yet. Marasmusine (talk) 11:56, 5 July 2017 (MDT)
- I have gone through and did some changes would like your thoughts on things as of now. I am glad that you could help me out with this. Matrixbob13 (talk) 15:24, 7 August 2017 (MDT)
- Most errors are still there.
- Still has two common saves.
- I can still create angelic power arrows over and over during my downtime, like a factory churning out magic items at no cost. If you can create an unlimited number of items, it should have a gp cost. An arrow of slaying is a similar magic arrow that deals an extra damage against a kind of creature, which would cost 5000 gp or more to make one.
- Seraph Blade says "you have access to use" but doesn't say how the blade is acquired.
- Both the arrows and blade deal damage that increases with level like a spell; but these are weapon attacks that benefit from Extra Attack: E.g., at 6th level, the damage output isn't increasing from +1d8 to +2d8: it's increasing to +4d8.
- Blending. Advantage is a circumstantial benefit that shouldn't be applied to all Stealth checks all the time.
- Fearless. There isn't a "fear check". See the wording of the Brave trait of 5e SRD:Halfling.
- Silent Brothers. Telepathy needs a range. How does the mind reading work? What's the range, do you need line of sight, is the target aware what you are doing, what kind of information do you receive? Wouldn't it be better to give them 5e SRD:Detect Thoughts instead? - Iron Sisters. Recommend reducing the bonus to +1.
- Agility and Grace: Ditto for Blending
- Ancient Armor: How is heavy armor proficiency any use? Dexterity is the prime ability score for this class: The seraph blade is a finesse weapon, and up until now I've been wearing light or medium armor which benefits good Dexterity. There's no reason to wear heavy armor.
- Why would I pick the Great Weapon Fighting style? My seraph blade has to be a weapon that I can only wield in one hand.
- Observation and Deduction. Investigation is used to deal with illusions, not Perception.
- I still haven't looked at the runes except for a quick glance to see that there are many many problems. Marasmusine (talk) 03:51, 17 August 2017 (MDT)
