Talk:Polar Owl (5e Race)

  • Is this actually an owl? How do they work with class choice?
  • What does Definite Precision actually do - ironically it's quite vague.
  • Flight is considered such a major trait that to be balanced, you would only get one other minor racial trait. This race has four skill proficiencies. (I'm assuming "advantage on saving throws" is a typo). Marasmusine (talk) 09:37, 7 April 2016 (MDT)

Why does this race have a -1 to Strength? None of the canon races I've seen so far have been penalised in stats. Also "bird" is not a type, the most accurate type (assuming you are an actual owl) for this race would be "beast." This race with the "Weakness of the Sky" seems like it would rather be in the sky, yet they are faster on land and, in fact, faster than land-dwelling creatures(!) like humans (30 ft. land speed) and wood elves (35 ft. land speed) SirSprinkles (talk) 21:58, 15 April 2016 (MDT)

I have reduced the land speed, changed the creature type, and added descriptors to why polar owls get the stat changes that they do.

Why are the subraces optional? I can think of no reason to not take a subrace. Also, what counts as "unreliable" for the purposes of Definite Precision? SirSprinkles (talk) 00:46, 20 June 2016 (MDT)

The subraces are optional due to the polar owls need to fit in with their kind, so most polar owls are solid white. The subraces add a colouration and a hue to their feathers, which makes them not fit in. That's why the subraces are optional. As for what an unreliable creature is. An unreliable creature is a creature that was previously caught,by the polar owl, being imprecise, over exxagerating, or vague. I hope that answers your questions. --Blackkirby73 (talk) 18:54, 20 June 2016 (MDT)

  • Does the race have just wings, or wings and hands? If they have hands, are they sort of at the wing tips? If they don't have hands, how do many class choices function (e.g. how do they hold things, cast somatic spells, etc)?
  • I still don't understand what an "unreliable creature" is. The polar owl catches a creature, then later it's not caught anymore, then you have advantage on Insight checks against it if it's being vague? That's really... odd...
  • Auran is an elemental language, for creatures from the Plane of Air. Is that where polar owls are from?
  • Can a polar owl still fly if it's wearing plate mail and wielding a shield and sword?
  • Subraces aren't optional, there's no point in not picking one
  • Unnecessary statements: "death saving throws not included"; "Flames do not count as a hot climate." Marasmusine (talk) 00:44, 21 June 2016 (MDT)

Polar owls do have hands at the end of their wings, I have noted that done.

Once a polar owl catches a creature being unreliable, they will remember them forever and will hold a grudge against them, that's where the advantage on insight checks made against that creature comes into play . Yes they were originally from the Plane of Air, but took refuge in the Material Plane, because their fellow Aurans though they were evil.

No they can not fly while wearing medium or heavy armour, or while wielding a weapon without the finesse property, or shields.

I have taken out all (I think) of the parts that say subraces are optional.

I have also taken out what is not needed.

Is there anything else that needs work, because I think it would be cool to make a working race that other people can use!--Blackkirby73 (talk) 15:35, 21 June 2016 (MDT)

"Definite Percision" is still a vague to me. I don't know if you mean "catch" as in "caught out being imprecise", or physically "caught". I don't know what the threshold for being "imprecise" is, it sounds like most NPCs the party will meet! If a creature lies to you, does that count? I've tried rewriting it to have some more mechanical definition, and moved its flavour text to the general description.
The other thing that needs work is the spelling grammar. Marasmusine (talk) 02:06, 22 June 2016 (MDT)

5e Race Page[edit]

Does anyone know how to get this on to the 5e Race page. I at least would like it on there even if it were on there as an incomplete race.

The page is missing the 5e racial traits template and all the categories, possible because it wasn't made using the "create new race" button at 5e Races. I can only suggest looking at the 5e race preload edit page and copy-pasting the missing items from it. Marasmusine (talk) 17:19, 15 April 2016 (MDT)

Thanks for the help.
