Talk:Pilot (3.5e Variant Rule)

Reflexes Are Key[edit]
I really think Piloting a vehicle should rely on the Dex score rather than the Int score- the level of intelligence required to make sense of the controls varies depending on the vehicle, but as far as actually operating a vehicle is concerned, I think being highly dexterous would be more important. --The Archivist 05:57, 14 October 2008 (MDT)
- I agree with the statement above. Think of Max Sterling from Robotech. He was very smart--but brains alone didn't make him a piloting ace. He had to have been very dextrous. If anything, allow Dex to rule this skill and THEN make a feat that allows you to substitute your Int for Dex in Pilot OR allows for Int to stack with Dex for this skill. It's be an intuitive/insightful thing, I think. --Gedren56 09:32, 14 October 2008 (MDT)
- I suppose you're right, although without a proper brain, you'll probably not learn it - or at least learn it well. There's something to say for Vehicle HD, or perhaps every vehicle has a minimum Intelligence score needed to drive it attached to its description. Like Int 9 for something like a buggy, Int 13 for a military vehicle, Int 15 for flying vehicles, etc. Also, you should be mindful of the fact that not all vehicles rely on Dexterity. A tank or a large ship at sea definitely requires more intelligence than dexterity to pilot (as far as the latter's concerned, we're talking about guys with wooden peg legs xP).
- So, instead of making the whole thing Dex based, I propose we keep it as it is, and introduce a 'Weapon Finesse' feat for vehicles instead that allows you to use your Dex mod for light and agile vehicles. --Sulacu 13:06, 14 October 2008 (MDT)
