Talk:Otherworlder (5e Background)
From D&D Wiki
What is the difference between this background and the fourth wall breaker? --209.97.85.48 18:53, 10 August 2016 (MDT)
- Aside from being very poorly written? The 4th Wall Breaker is genre savvy and may be native to the setting, while the otherworlder is not really either of those things. --Kydo (talk) 22:27, 16 September 2016 (MDT)
Questions[edit]
Does anyone have any ideas about what could be done to make this better? I was thinking change the "Choose any one proficiency" Thing to "Roll 1d17" to choose, minus the one given by the background. It would be pretty easy to fix the grammar issues, and while I understand the fact that it isn't really genre savvy, it could still be fun to run in a game.

- These discussions are best had on talk pages so everyone can benefit from the information and understand why a page develops the way it does. It's a record of the spirit of the page. Things to change:
- What the heck is a d17?!
- Why is insight even one of their skills? What is it about being an earth-human would make you better at reading the expressions of an elf?
- I'm totally cool with a background which randomizes your skill selection- that is new and exciting. However, the skills it could potentially choose for you should still be thematically reasonable.
- It needs a lot more detail, flavor-wise. In other words, it needs more actual writing.
- The feature needs to be made into something actually functional. The current RP feature doesn't actually do anything, it just slightly changes the way people react to you until the DM decides you're famous. Then it actually does nothing at all.
- I am fond of this concept. Reminds me of the old D&D cartoon and the Monster Rancher anime. I think it would be best if this background could at least emulate the characters from the D&D cartoon. --Kydo (talk) 05:21, 23 October 2016 (MDT)

- a d17 would be using a dice roller. if needed, it could just be a d20. I'm an idiot, sorry ;; If they need to be thematically reasonable, I would say Perception, Deception, Stealth, etc; Things which could be conceived as viable for a human to use? And you could use a dice roller or have your DM pick out of those, maybe. As for Feature, Maybe something along the lines of "When you meet new people, you can regale them with tales of your world, fascinating them and convincing them that these stories are priceless, and can be traded for information and goods"... or something. Other than that, maybe you could have a set up regarding confusing people and basically just making them leave you alone? Seeing you as crazy for claiming you're from a different world, and such.

- I agree about removing the stat boosting item. That's inappropriate for a background. I think we should avoid requiring the use of digital randomizers. We shouldn't make content which requires the audience to have technology that's even more unusual than polyhedral dice. Also, different randomizers have different degrees of randomness and different limitations to range, so are much more likely to produce undesirable and inconsistent results across many players. --Kydo (talk) 17:51, 23 October 2016 (MDT)
Why is this background handing out feats, or even parts of feats?--Gr7mm Bobb (talk) 23:44, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
