Talk:Multi-type Damage Weapons Variant (5e Variant Rule)
From D&D Wiki
I like the idea of a PC that's proficient in martial weapon being able to deliver slashing or piercing damage equally with their longsword, but I think that the ultimate example of such a weapon is the halberd. The design of their heads lends them exceptionally well to slashing, piercing, and in many cases even bludgeoning. In the case of a halberd that has the capacity to equally deliver all three types of damage, which is certainly not uncommon, I think something beyond requiring proficiency should be needed. If a PC is running around with a martial weapon, chances are he is already proficient with it, and I want to provide some defense from having everyone immediately opt in favor of a halberd over anything else. Simply requiring something like the Polearm Master feat would fix this easily, and it would only be needed in this one case since the halberd is the only weapon I can think of that could deliver all three damage types equally.
