Talk:Mechanical T-Hook (5e Equipment)
From D&D Wiki
So the rope is an ultra-lightweight mesh. Sounds really useful, a 100ft. of rope and a grappling hook that weighs less than 4 pounds. Even better than silk rope. Is it magical? Can I buy it seperately? Marasmusine (talk) 02:37, 5 August 2017 (MDT)
That rope would cost triple what silk rope costs. A lot of the cost of the gun is for the rope. MakerCaker (talk)
- I see, yes, so 50 ft. of the rope would cost 30gp; 100 ft. would cost 60 gp. If it's a special material, I'd say you would need proficiency in the alchemy kit to make it.
- I feel it should be more expensive: Going from hempen to silk is times ten the cost, for half the weight. If you repeat that, you get a 100 ft. rope that costs 200 gp and weighs 5 lb. This ultralight rope is lighter that even that?
- I suppose the grappling hook must be special too.
- I also wonder how the energy to shoot the hook is stored too. Is it a crossbow mechanism, or compressed air or somesuch? But it also needs the energy to reel the hook in too!
- Another curiosity is that it isn't harder to hit things at a long range (as it is with other ranged weapons), although it deals less damage. Is there any problem with giving it a range of, say, 25/100? (with damage 1d8/1d4)?
- Option - It's a fantasy game so all of these mechanical oddities can be explained as "magical", how do you feel about it being a magic item? Marasmusine (talk) 09:16, 5 August 2017 (MDT)
I suppose it is a little wondrous, but I can say it's just made with amazing gnomish technology or something. I'd like it to stay where it is. -MakerCaker
