The AC Dilemma.

Tortles from the official material get a flat 17 AC, increasing to 21 (17+4) AC when they enter their shell, although they can't use armor or their dexterity bonus to add to this, however they are all capable of using a shield, with savvy Tortles able to have 19 (17+2) AC with a standard shield if they do not enter their shell. this doesn't count any AC bonuses from classes they could have access to. all this potentially at lv 1, but also permanently through all levels.

Meanwhile the Ishilb can have at max 12 (10+2) AC to start with, and with 18 Constitution at level 1 this increases up to 16 (12+4) AC. If they use a standard shield this could be at max 18 (12+4+2) AC. The withdrawal does need to be reworded, as it either means they get 10+2+ Con mod AC, or 10+ (2 + Con mod) + Con mod AC, which means A) their AC does not change when they enter their shell other than losing equipment bonuses, or B) they can have at max (12+4+4) 20 AC when they withdraw, respectively. Their access to armor is limited to custom craftsmanship AND by the amount of gold they have, and if they enter their shell, they lose all benefit from their armor or shields to their ac.

However their access (even with difficulty) to armor means either: with standard light armor they get max 18 (12+2+4) AC, 20 with a shield; with standard medium armor they get max 19 (15+2+2) AC, 21 with a shield; or with standard heavy armor they get max 20 AC (18+2), or 22 with a shield. all with max lv 1 stat of 18 in Constitution.

Here is where we should discuss the best approach to balancing the shelled subrace of Ishilb. Should they be limited further in their access to armor? should they be restricted from gaining the benefits of their dexterity bonus? should they not have access to shields? some combination of these? --PopsFortuitous (talk) 18:48, 1 October 2018 (MDT)

The power of this defining or major trait should be balanced against the other traits this race receives and then assessed as a whole against comparable first party content. With that in mind, a clean up of the other traits would help make this decision easier over what needs to be done as they are probably too strong atm. —ConcealedLightChatmod.png (talk) 15:12, 2 October 2018 (MDT)
