Allowing Shields[edit]

A player brought up a concern with me when I showed them this Feat. They proved to me that a wizard that takes this Feat can very easily get up to 17 AC:
10+2(Dex)+3(Int)+2(Shield) / 10+1(Dex)+4(Int)+2(Shield)
Going by the same logic, 18 AC is also extremely easy for a wizard to get with this Feat:
10+2(Dex)+4(Int)+2(Shield)
This player has told me that this can make it very easy for wizards to cheese, with literal fighter levels of AC. They've suggested removing the ability to use this Feat with shields. - Alice-chan (talk) 18:20, 1 January 2019 (MST)

Overall, I dont like the principle of giving a class feature type of ability in a feat like this as the classes with this sort of thing are balanced around it. I would suggest allowing them to REPLACE their Dex to AC with their Int mod. This allows for wizards that take it to have a nice bump, but not rocket up to monk/barbarian levels of AC. With that change in place the use of shields becomes "OK" and forces the caster to have one of their hands occupied that could be used to hold a focus.--Gr7mm Bobb (talk) 20:47, 1 January 2019 (MST)

Yeah, this was also another alternative suggestion given by the player I showed this Feat to as well, a while later after my previous post here. And with your additional insight, I think such a change would be the better choice. I'll wait and see if anything happens to this Feat in the next several hours, but if not then I'll take it upon myself to make the necessary changes. - Alice-chan (talk) 01:06, 2 January 2019 (MST)

With how i currently reads, stating that you can use a shield and still gain the benfits. Most things, like the monk, usually state when you can't use a shield. Feel free to undo the change, but I'm going to remove the bit about shields just to slim it down overall. I love/hate volo's and their "no-duh' rule about shields and armor in the lizardfolk race. That bit really should have been a clarification sidebar, not a block of text in a specific creature. --Gr7mm Bobb (talk) 09:12, 3 January 2019 (MST)
