Talk:Homunculus, Variant 3 (5e Race)
From D&D Wiki
I am afraid to say that the homunculi are a bit too strong for a race. Here we go:
- Ability Score Increase. 3-point free distribution is somewhat interesting, but two skill proficiencies are a bit too strong, considering that the homunculi will get proficiency in Deception as well.
- Speed. Notice that the wood elves have the fastest walking speed in PHB... of 35 feet. Either there are justification for this fast stride, I suggest slowing it down, or make a sub-race that specialize in fast movements.
- Lifestone. Okay, seriously, there are Hit Dice for a reason. And Hid Dice can heal you up to, like, 1d12 at best (if you happen to be a barbarian) plus your Constitution modifier. Automatic hit point regain per short is too cheap, I suggest enhancing Hit Dice efficiency, as in several feats. (By the way, you regain all hit points upon finishing long rest, so Lifestone feature would be redundant on long rest.)
- Arcane Origins. Double spell slots, double known spells... Double broken. I suggest no justification for this, this is just too much.
- Alpha Stigma. Automatic spell theft, access to all spells... Yup, broken.
- Truesight. Notice that truesight is the single most difficult vision ability to acquire. Heck, even dragons seldom get truesight. Truesight by default means no deception, no illusion, no plot twist for homunculi. In short: no fun.
- Unarmored Defense. And I thought homunculi was supposed to be spellcaster-oriented? Again, I ask for justification, or you might want to erase this out. Furthermore, the Unarmored Defense feature uses Wisdom... and Alpha Stigma uses Charisma. I see multiple ability dependence.
In short: the current version of homunculi is too strong to integrate in the game. There would be no reason anyone would play as anything else. Either you consider some downgrade and sub-race diversification, or you may make it enemy-exclusive, something that players would overcome. (I see Fullmetal Alchemist reference, but if you would like to use it, I guess the homunculi are best for enemies and adversaries, rather than protagonists.) --WeirdoWhoever (talk) 23:09, 17 February 2017 (MST)
