Talk:Harpoon (3.5e Equipment)

Changed quite a lot in the stats department of this weapon - it now follows the standards set in the SRD more closely (damage increases, weight doubling etc.) I'm also iffy about the name: harpoon implies that the weapon is the javelin-like harpoon part, while the description here seems to refer to a harpoon launcher, or even a ballista. I'd suggest this is changed to Ballista (3.5e Equipment) and the description modified to mention that the stats can also be used for a harpoon launcher. Cancelion (talk) 02:21, 15 May 2014 (MDT)

Yes, an actual harpoon is a tethered spear, we have this at Harpoon, Variant (3.5e Equipment). The harpoon launcher and the ballista are pieces of artillery, which I feel should have some mechanical framework other than two-handed weapons. You sit/stand at them rather than moving with them so probably BAB wouldn't even be used. In fact I think that artillery should be Save-based, with the DC based on the piece's quality (e.g. the level of the creator, like magic items). Marasmusine (talk) 03:01, 15 May 2014 (MDT)
Agreed, we also have Harpoon, hand (3.5e Equipment) which I think is better formatted and more in-depth (self-insert ahoy!). Both harpoons are clearly versions of the sahuagin harpoon, btw. It'd make sense to remove this entry entirely and create a ballista entry in 3.5e Siege Weapons (which doesn't have a link to 3.5e Equipment...?). Cancelion (talk) 03:43, 15 May 2014 (MDT)
