Talk:Gladiator (5e Subclass)

Players can already make a "shove" action. "Bash" should be something like "When you make a shove action, you can half your proficiency bonus to your Strength check". Although this doesn't feel very "gladiatory" to me.

Bash, Knock Down and Taunt are already very similar Battle Master maneuvers, and I'm not sure what the lead sentence for Heroic Act means. I think this feature should be changed into something unique to the gladiator. Read a bit about historical gladiators for ideas. For example: essedarius fought each other from the back of chariots; bestiarius fought lions and bears; Retiarius specialized in nets, and so on.

I have the urge to try something like this, if you'd like. Marasmusine (talk) 01:24, 25 February 2015 (MST)

By all means, go for it. Azernath (talk) 01:33, 25 February 2015 (MST)
I've added a few "schools" for 3rd level, there's loads more, they're quite fun to make. Then I'll have a closer look at the other features. Marasmusine (talk) 02:44, 7 March 2015 (MST)
What about the Brave and Aggressive ability, I think it should be a 3rd level ability with the Gkadiator schools. Azernath (talk) 05:16, 7 March 2015 (MST)
I'll try and work it in somewhere. Marasmusine (talk) 01:55, 8 March 2015 (MST)
Okay, I've adapted it into the Secutor school. Marasmusine (talk) 03:30, 8 March 2015 (MDT)
The old abilities reflected the gladiator NPC abilities, so the brave ability and brutality must be similar to the NPC. Azernath (talk) 23:30, 11 March 2015 (MDT)
An extra die of damage to all melee attacks is huge. A greataxe would do 2d12 (about +6 damage). It disfavors fighters who choose the archery style. Fighters can also get damage bonuses that aren't considered in the NPC statblock.
The brave ability is included in the secutor school. Marasmusine (talk) 02:08, 12 March 2015 (MDT)
I will try to simplify everything and try to make things interesting. Azernath (talk) 02:21, 12 March 2015 (MDT)
I'll move my stuff to a variant page if it's not suitable for you. Marasmusine (talk) 08:03, 12 March 2015 (MDT)

No, what I am saying is we should just simplify things. Azernath (talk) 09:47, 12 March 2015 (MDT)

Hi Aitharious here, I've read over the Gladiator Archetype and everything seems likes it's quite well done, though I have no idea what the Master Finisher does. It seems like it's meant to be an alternative attack against someone that is prone or near death. But their are no extra features to this attack that I have noticed, although I'm assuming it would deal additional damage as it is a "Finishing" move.
If this feature is one use between long and/or short it could deal several extra weapon dice, if several times it could be like the Battle Masters: Superiority Dice, and if an every round use perhaps adding an additional strength modifier.
one other note the Brutalities effect lasts "until the of your turn" so that should probably be fixed.
Well, it basically give you an extra attack if the enemy is weak enough. Azernath (talk) 19:48, 1 May 2015 (MDT)
Perhaps it could be worded like this "At level 18 you can make another additional attack against an enemy that is prone and/or at HP equal to or less than (Fighter level + Strength mod + your proficiency bonus), but you can't use your Brutality with this attack until 20th level" --Aitharious (talk) 14:21, 7 May 2015 (MDT)
Took me a while to get round to it, but I've made a rewrite of Master Finisher. How is it? Marasmusine (talk) 08:21, 24 September 2015 (MDT)
I like it, but what made you decide to add 2d6? Also, what do you think about the schools renaming, are they fitting to the description? Azernath (talk) 11:10, 24 September 2015 (MDT)
I felt like a conditional extra attack on its own wasn't really good enough for a level 18 feature, so I added some oomph.
I dunno about the names, I had got used to the traditional names, could we have the latin and their translation? Marasmusine (talk) 13:29, 24 September 2015 (MDT)
Sure, if you think it is better as long as they work as good. Azernath (talk) 14:45, 24 September 2015 (MDT)
Sorry to jump in on the conversation but I think you could use both, doesn't really change much and allows for the players to choose what they prefer to use. --Aitharious (talk) 12:13, 25 September 2015 (MDT)
