Talk:Educated Rodents (5e Race)
From D&D Wiki
Hello, regarding the recent suggestions to the race, I have made significant changes to the balance, including fleshing out the difference between the subraces, replacing the Tiny trait with a redirection to the page on Tiny characters, removing a few of the traits from subraces, giving a base of Dex +1 to the race and each subrace a +2 in Int or Wis, as well as general improvements to wording and grammar. I did have to make an exception to the Tiny character's rule with regards to squeezing through spaces, as a rat should be able to fit through something far smaller than 15 inches. If there are still issues, I will change them as soon as possible.
- Good job. Few more things should be tweaked. You should avoid using flat increases such as the "+3 to stealth", giving them proficiency in the stealth skill should be a good fix. The first letter of racial traits should be capitalized. Instead of "You gain proficiency in Acrobatics." it should be "You are proficient in the Acrobatics skill.". You can see a full list of most of the first party traits and their wording at [[Musicus Meter (5e Guideline}]]. As Rat isn't an actual language a Rat can speak, giving them a trait much like the yuan-ti purebloods ability to communicate with snakes would be appropriate here. The Tiny trait can be condensed right down by removing the miscellaneous text something like "(define size). (state squeezing trait). In addition, (stealth proficiency)". Once those are done you should be good to go. —ConcealedLight (talk) 04:59, 24 November 2018 (MST)
- Good calls, I have changed the wording on the Tiny trait to be more concise, and provide Stealth proficiency. I have also changed the Black Rat's subrace trait to doubling proficiency bonuses for perception checks that involve hearing, as 3 starting proficiencies seemed odd. They can now speak with rats exclusively as though they are under a Speak with Animals spell. Once more, any further issues, and I will address them.
- The wording as I mentioned before still needs tidying up, as does the capitalization of racial traits. In regards to formatting spells should be typed like this ''{{5e|Speak with Animals}}'' which comes out like this speak with animals. It's generally a good rule of thumb to include references in your page so people have easy links to the sites SRD and don't have to scroll through their book or pdf's. Only thing I'd change is instead of granting "double proficiency", saying "You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing." as a number of beasts in dnd have a similar trait and "double proficiency" is not as seamless during play as is advantage. —ConcealedLight (talk) 09:07, 24 November 2018 (MST)
- I have added some more references, changed Keen Hearing, and fixed the capitals. I have reconfigured the wording for the tiny trait, this time moving the references to the rules to the Size trait, and moved the squeeze and stealth traits to a separate trait called Lithe. I know this is not exactly what you described, but I think it is functional and understandable, if it is not, then I will change it.
- Alright should be all done now. GJ. —ConcealedLight (talk) 05:26, 25 November 2018 (MST)
