Talk:Dream Demon (5e Class)
From D&D Wiki
Hi to anyone who reads this. I am new to Dnd wiki but would like to state my opinions about this class (not the creator). To me, it seems like it can derail the campaign very easily. It spends most of its time invincible, and is useless if you just randomly enter combat. It also has no way to return to the astral plane after being grappled. Also, if it does get sent to the material plane, it only has a d4 of hit-dice. It has very low health, invincibility at level one (conditional, but still), and its damage is very dm dependent. It is a very cool class with fun abilities, but it seems better suited as a bbeg rather than a player character. At level two "welcome to my nightmare" does help, but at level one they are very weak. I hope this feedback helps.
Response to previous concern.[edit]
Heya'. Creator of this class, here. I fully understand where you're coming from, but the point of it being DM dependant is so the player and the DM can communicate on the many aspects of the class before heading into a campaign. It's a strange class, to be sure, but for it to be truly balanced for any campaign, I believe communication between player and DM is required.
About the not being able to return to the Astral plane on its own bit, that's on purpose. The class is based off of Freddy Krueger and the Nightmare on Elm Street Franchise, and in the first movie, he only returned to the Dream World after his death in the physical world. Which, if you noticed, is a feature of the class later on at 10th level. The point of the 1st level feature "Their Souls Give Me Strength" is to mitigate the chance you die outside of the Astral Plane up until 10th level, but still have the air of challenge due to being stuck with a D4 Hit Die. Players get into many fights during a campaign, so staying close to the action will ensure that the person playing this class will get some extra HP, but it's also a dangerous game because if you are taken outside of the Astral Plane, you still only have a D4 health pool to work with.
Additionally, I don't really know how you can call the class "weak" when you're also saying that the conditional invincibility is an issue. If the problem is that the class doesn't do very much damage, that increases over time as seen in the "Nightmare Damage Die" Table. Additionally, seeing as if you don't play the class ABSOLUTELY recklessly, during earlier levels, you should be focused on decreasing the moral of enemies and catching them off guard rather than trying to be a DPS. This class is clearly not meant for that, just like how a wizard probably shouldn't punch things, and a rogue probably shouldn't use heavy armor.
I hope this has been helpful.

Response to response[edit]
I can understand your reasoning, and I am sorry if I sounded mean. I love the idea and gimmick, but there are some things that need to be fixed. It cannot interact with the material plane well, so maybe a mage hand that can be used from the astral plane and the ability to take physical objects from the material plane? Also, the astral plane is not like the ethereal plane in that it is a direct copy of the material plane. The astral plane is the endless sea. Maybe change it to the ethereal plane because that allows you to see the material plane? Also, I cannot remove my original comment. Sorry about that. --RandomPerson123 (talk) 08:26, 12 March 2024 (MDT)
