Talk:Combat Helmet (5e Equipment)
From D&D Wiki
I disagree with the decision to reduce the AC bonus provided by this piece of partial armor on the following grounds:
- First, in terms of flavor: Armor that is made today (which the page represents) are made of materials that are much stronger and more advanced than is assumed to be present in a normal D&D setting. For example, the helmets that the U.S. Army and USMC use today are made of ballistic fibers and/or thermoplastics that are at least five times as strong as steel, and provide more protection from blunt trauma, heat, and high-velocity impacts than a medieval great helmet. I believe a higher AC bonus is thus fair.
- Second, in terms of game balance: This is a modern item, and no price is given because like other modern items it is not assumed to be commonly available in most campaigns. Yes, it is intended to be a Medium piece of partial armor that provides the same AC bonus as a Heavy piece of partial armor. But that is because it uses special materials and manufacturing techniques that are assumed to be impossible to normally replicate using a typical setting's technology. Conceptually, what does that sound similar to? A magical item, which in a pseudo-medieval fantasy setting it might as well be. Based Quincy (talk) 17:23, 15 March 2019 (MDT)
