Talk:Blitzkrieger (5e Subclass)

Neat Fighter! I want to use it but...[edit]
Hey I love seeing a speed-focused martial archetype since there is so little to find in the PHB and this fast striker subclass is what I want to use for my next game. I have some critiques about certain abilites, though, and I might not know what your idea is for this subclass, but I wanted to just put an idea or two out there for ya ;)
Light-Footed-- Maybe instead of a speed boost, you can instead make a buffed dash action?
Linear Momentum-- This seems a bit janky to charge in a +ten foot line for bonus damage equal to half the squares travelled . Maybe add an additional d4 per 10ft. travelled? Then scale the damage at certain levels?
Armor Restrictions-- I understand it's supposed to be a dexterous class, so a heavy armor restriction I understand, but does really have to be a shield and medium armor restriction when it comes to using abilities? It takes away core equipment to a fighters toolkit. At the very least, shields shouldn't be restricted from using, but maybe that would make this subclass to overpowered with a high AC. Idk
Overdrive-- Does it need to be tied to action surge? Maybe a once per short or long rest kind of thing. Then again, allowing action surge and haste at the same time must be kind of overpowered, huh...
Booming Blitz-- For a level 18th ability, it seems very underpowered. The teleportation mechanic is really great, but the damage not so great. Maybe with the loud boom caused by the teleportation, it causes a stun effect along with the thunder damage (which should be buffed slightly) --Emprial (talk) 21:36, 14 April 2020 (MDT)
thanks for the input![edit]
Some thoughts[edit]
light-footed -- I went with the speed boost over the bonus action dash so that it would work well with two-weapon fighting. I felt that it seemed so on-brand to dual wield while jetting around.
linear momentum -- Yeah, I agree it feels a bit clunky. i suppose the d4 would work if it didn't scale on distance traveled or if I limited it to once per turn. It's meant to scale by way of you getting additional speed and attacks as you level up. It seemed like something that could very easily become overpowered. Also, straight line isn't intended to mean only one of eight directions. It's meant to be as flexible as a line shape of a spell. Incidentally, I deliberately wrote it to work with ranged attacks as well.
Edit 4/25/20: I changed the wording without altering the mechanics. Hopefully it seems less clunky this way.
armor restrictions -- shields are banned for a couple reasons. the first is strictly aerodynamics (lol). The second is thematic. The archetype is meant to be a bit of a glass cannon, on par with rogue and monk, getting its defensive abilities from other abilities. Lastly, Haste gives you a +2 to AC anyway. I understand that removing armor takes away a bit of the fighter's shtick, but it seemed like a better fit for the subclass than any of the other classes (the next closest was barbarian, incidentally. Also, I just noticed how vulnerable it is to opportunity attacks until 15th level. I'm adding something to fix that under the light-footed ability.
Overdrive -- yes, it's tied to to the action surge to make it have a cost, and to prevent them stacking.
booming blitz -- i love the idea of adding the stunned condition. I'm adding it in. I didn't really know where to put the damage, to be perfectly honest. --Jikennosamurai (talk) 23:21, 15 April 2020 (MDT)
