Talk:Bladecaster (5e Class)
From D&D Wiki
Looks good, but the Weapon Enhancement options don't seem to have anything for Rapiers, or other one-handed weapons. What if the player wants to build a dex-based Bladecaster? I feel like there ought to be some form of middle ground between two-handers and throwing weapons. That aside, this looks to be a fairly well-built class. Have you been working on it for long? --Nuke The Earth (talk) 04:04, 28 October 2020 (MDT)
I've been working on this for about 4 days, but I've always wanted to make a class that is 50% Martial 50% Arcane. I've been thinking about this for years.
Also, what recommendations do you have to make it more dex centered?
I already have this bit
"Beginning at 14th level, your magical weapon’s prowess increases. It gains a throwing range of 20/40. If it already has a throwing range, double it. Additionally, your weapon gains the finesse property if it doesn’t already have it."
It's auto-finnese at 14th level, what recommendations do you have at lower levels?
- Well, I was more thinking the 20th level ability, Magic Weapon Enhancement. It gives a buff to two-handers (the ability to wield them one-handed), or it gives a buff to thrown weapons (the range increase), but nothing in between. In my experience, people don't really use thrown weapons all that often, though it could be different in your games. Essentially, you should try to cover all possible use cases - maybe someone wants to use a crossbow, or other ranged weapon, in which case a throw range is redundant. I should also add that giving the weapon a throwing range at all seems odd, as you'd hardly want to throw away your weapon in battle, even if you could teleport it back to your hand.
A few other issues of note are the Spellslinger's ability to attune to more than the allotted amount of attuned items - this can very easily become game-breaking, and I would advise against it unless you can find official WOTC material that does the same - as well as the fact that your weapon eventually gives you a flying speed, of all things. Personally, I'd think any sort of caster who wanted to fly would learn the spell to do so. It's only 3rd level, after all.
Aside from all that, it looks like you might only need a few minor wording changes to keep everything looking smooth and consistent with WOTC material, like rewriting the aura effect of the 20th level ability into something resembling the aura effect of a Paladin. Truthfully, I've only skimmed the page, but it holds up admirably to an initial scan, and looks far more complete and well-written than some classes that have been on the wiki for years. I applaud your ability, and I look forward to seeing your future contributions to the wiki. Please consider joining us over on the wiki's official Discord server, with a good number of other eager contributors and the resident admins. I think you'd like the place. --Nuke The Earth (talk) 07:14, 28 October 2020 (MDT)
thank you for your recommendations. I'll probably add them soon. This is the first class I've made so thanks for the feedback.
Hey, so, I noticed this page was marked as abandoned. I honestly forgot about it. But, I just did some minor touch-ups, so its not a complete mess, and I'll be working on this over the next few days. Is it okay if I remove the abandoned tag after I do this? Thanks. --Sir George the 3rd (talk) 10:56, 17 February 2022 (MST)
